View Full Version : Lyman 358416
I obtained an old IDEAL mold, 358416.
Makes good boolits. I've been looking for a mold that throws a bullet that I can feel safe with in my Marlin 1894, 38 Spec., CBC rifle.
I wanted a bullet with a slight meplat, but also needed a nose shape that would feed well through the lever action rifle.
This may be what I've been looking for ? I feel very safe with this flat meplat boolit resting against the primer in the mag. tube of my rifle.
I'm anxious to test some of these. I loaded a few " dummies " to see how they would fed through my 1894. They run through the rifle like water through screen wire.
Any of you have any experience with this mold ?

That looks like it would work great in a Marlin . The only thing I see wrong is it is a single cav. mold. That won't work for my marlin 94C. My marlin will outrun a single cav. mold by a long ways.
The best boolit I have found for my 94C is a Lee 158gr. RF. The 125 gr RF also works real good. Both in a 6 cav. mold.......Terry

I have no experience with that bullet, though not for a lack of trying. I have spent years trying to find a 4 cavity--heck even a twofer. Congrats on your singleton. They were supposed to cast at 158 using Lyman #2 and I would expect that any data for a 158 RN would do just fine. They were originally designed to mimic the bullet profile in the ".38 Colt Special." Colt put a flat nose on their versions of popular S&W cartridges so they wouldn't have to put their rival's name on their guns. This also explains the Colt .38 New Police Cartridge whose salient differences from the long established 38 S&W was a single grain of lead and a slightly flattened nose

According to Lyman's info on Cast Pics, it's a 158gr.
Ben, I still aspire to cast as good-looking boolits as you. Can you share any secrets?
I think that's an awesome/perfect boolit for your lever-rifle; although I agree wholeheartedly with TCFAN that a single-cav. is just not going to work long-term... Maybe send a sample or two of those PERFECT castings you make to NOE or Accurate Moulds...

I don't recall having ever seen that mold. Interestingly, the shape is much like the Winchester 44-40, 38-40, and 32-20 bullets with the exception of having a flat base.
My Marlin 1894c(s) have been receiving GC bullets, and mostly the Saeco #354, but I did buy the Lee 358-158RF. Its profile is very close to that of the Saeco, and feeds well through my 357s.

Thanks for those nice comments .....No secrets here. Keep the mold hot, I cast with a ladle. Clean alloy and a steady ( quick ) pace without over heating the mold.
Yes, I wish it were at least a 2 cavity mold.....but...if it shoots well, I've got a lot of time on my hands, this single cavity will keep me off the streets.

I failed to weigh the bullet yesterday, but the data I'm looking at says 158 grs.

That mold is a great find!
I have harvested 2 deer with that boolit cast from a single mold that is the property of a good friend.
I was using the boolit ion my 17.5 inch barreled single shot 357 mag rifle. I was loading only 4.2 gr. of BE for 1078 FPS from the rifle. At 92 yards it will shoot threw both shoulders of a large deer. Neither deer went over 15 yards from point of impact and tipped over. I was shooting air cooled WWs. Very accurate and I could eat right up to the boolit hole.

Single cavity that I use in a 38 S&W. Have some loaded in 357 Mag cases but haven't shot them yet. Plenty of 357's to try it in. Mark

Upstate NY deer are a lot like MI deer... big. (So, that's saying something!) It would probably shoot through TWO Texas deer!

I have had that one for years. The old Ideal book lists it as a favorite for Humane Societies animal dispatching! I agree

This boolit makes a 38spc case/boolit OAL as long as a 357 mag so it`ll feed thru lever carbines.
