I know it can be done but how? I have read about chemicals that can be mixed to color brass. I have a 6x45 and a couple 223's, I want to change the color of the 6x45 brass so I can tell them apart.

Anyone ever done anythin like that?
How does it hold up to tumbling?

Yeah, I did it decades ago, so it CAN be done. I think I got the formulas from a machinist's handbook of some sort, but that was before the internet. There was a thread here a while back with the title "Coloring brass cases", where there are all sorts of formulas for different colors. Do a short search.

Doug, if you find it will you post a link on this thread for it?

Thanks,

I think I am going to try the Birchwood Casey "Brass Black" if I can find some.....or maybe I will switch to nickel cases for my 6x45. I would really like a bunch of the bras hornady uses for that TAP ammo.

Magic Marker works to color brass. You may need to touch it up after a few firings.

Brownells oxpho (spelling?) blue works good if you have any handy.

Is there anything "permenent" that will last several trips through an auto loader and a tumbler?

Think about it: the tumbler works by a polishing / abrasive process. Abraiding the surface will remove any color film there before it gets to the surface.
