I am having a neighbor make me a 8" smealting pot and it got me thinking, can I make a pot out of SS and us a SS valve in the bottom so I can just use it as a bottom pour pot? Has any one tried any thing like this before with any luck?

Stainless is better than ferrous steel. It costs more and is harder to weld.
Stainless can be stick welded but , you really need a TIG welder and can get by with a MIG if you have the SS wire.
One problem with stainless is knowing what alloy you have and what weld filler/rod to use.

I switched to a SS pot some years back. My dross accumulation dropped by 50% at least. I put that down to the smooth surface and lack of rust.

Yes do the SS and make it bottom pour. This is mine, just bottom is SS, use 8" ID steel pipe for the rest.

Dragonrider, how does your valve work? That is a simple looking idea. I have tig welded SS before so its not that big of a thing for me.
