I am building a 510 Kayser Express (510 Wells minus the stinking belt) and a 550 on the 505 Gibbs cartrdige case. Anybody got any thoughts on powder?
thanks,
Rich

ISS; I have no experience with either caliber you mention, but I'll bet not many do. It would seem to me that surp-powders 4895 and 4475 should be about right, and in ball powder maybe special ball(H380 speed)
With the case capacity, groove dia, barrel length, and bullet weight there are several people on here with software to give you starting loads, Bass Akwards can give you estimated pressure with the data.

..........swheeler is right. In most any straight walled rifle case you're going to want a medium to medium-slow powder. THE powder for high intensity loads in the 45-70 is IMR3031. However I'm also going to say I really have no idea of the capacity of the 505 Gibbs. I believe 45Nut has a 505 Gibbs and would have some insight.
The safest way if there isn't any or much data, is to start with something real slow, then work backwards (faster) till you see the ballistics you want or pressure signs. By the time you get there you should be plenty slap happy from recoil :-)

I my 505 I shoot a 600 grain gas check with 140 grains of WC 860 for 2000 fps. I do not want or need any more than that. It does kill very well. I also use 125 grains of Re 25 which I have not chrono'ed. This in Bell brass and jamison. The aussie stuff is junk DO NOT waste your money on it.

Actually my rifle is a 500 ASquare..460 Wby necked up to .510
My favorite plinking load is the Lyman 515141 over 110grs of H 870. My H 870 supply is getting low however.
The next load level is a 725gr NEI design over 100grs of IMR 4350.
Recoil is there, but due to the muzzlebrake can be handled quite well standing,I installed a Williams peep after this picture...

There is an attorney down in Texas who uses .45 watts to hunt rabbits. Why? Because he wants to. It's good to be different.
I'm into mild calibers.

Wouldn't DP 74 be just about right for heavy boolits in this particular .50? If I was loading for that cartridge, I'd be economy conscience.

Click on powders, then on Accurate Arms. DP 74 is the second from the top and burns like 4320. Post a picture of something being blown up by your .50 please.
