I like to use boolits sized to the max the chamber / throat will take
As IMO I get better accurcy
But sometimes this means I have to just run a boolit into a sizer enough to crimp on the GC and then pan lube it
As I have found once in a while just using the oversized sizer die dose not do a good job crimping on the GC
As in using a 30 cal GC in a .315 sizer die for the 7.62x54R
So tonight while setting in the tree stand hoping the 10 point buck I have been chaseing would come into bow range
I was thinking (dangerous I know )
Why not make a pleir type GC crimper ?
I could make replaceable jaws to crimp on GC's , onto a varity of cal. of boolits
Just have to make the jaws with a finished dia recess in the jaws
And the recess being flat bottomed and the same depth as a GC is high
Just insert the boolit with a GC snaped onto the shank , into the recess in the jaws and squeaze
1 squease and the GC would be crimped on
But then I got to thinking the 2 jaws of the crimper might catch the GC between the 2 halves before closeing
So I thought I could make a 4 jaw collet to squease the GC to crimp it on
Make the closed collet ID the proper size to crimp the GC
But when open allow easy inserting and removal
Set the Boolit on the collet with the GC snaped on and lower the press ram
Make 1 die to screw into a press and different collets for the different cal.
Sort of how RCBS collets on their trimmer works
Just have to make a adt. to atach the collet to the press ram
But after setting there for a few hours and only seeing a few doe's
I knew I would never get around to making either design
As I have several projects in various stages on the work bench now :groner:
So if anyone likes my idea
Run with it and post a pic
BTW if you make a collet design , I need one for .225 and .312 at least :drinks:
