What should the shanks on my 30 caliber cast bullets measure to have Hornady and Gator gas checks fit properly? Thanks!

Thanks Felix, all my bullets are measuring 0.286" for the smallest and 0.289" for the largest, do I have a problem? All these are dropped from Lyman 30 cal molds (311467, 311284, 314299) and are #2 alloy, except for one which is made from 20:1. Funny, I thought they were too small as the box of Hornady gas checks I have fit real loose, actually they fall right off. These have not yet been through the sizer, am I missing something here?

Once sized, the Hornady checks should stay in place on the shank. If they are still falling off after sizing, something ain't right.

I have the opposite problem with a couple of my 30 caliber molds--shanks too big for 30 caliber checks. I spread the check mouths a little with a tapered punch to get around this problem.

Ah, OK I thought they should fit pretty good before sizing. Thanks!

I had that problem with an old Lyman #3589 that I found languishing at a local gunshop. With my wallet $25 lighter, it came home with me. The bullet casts beautifully except the gas check shank is too small, and the checks will not stay on even after running through the sizer. I "Beagled" the mold and now the checks stay on.
It's been way too hot here to cast bullets and I'm anxiously awaiting winter. That's when I do most of my casting these days. Not much fun when it's 110 plus degrees in the workshop.
