Why do you have to lube molds and sprue plates and what kinds of lube do you use to do it?

The two biggest reasons to lube a mold are first to prevent galling of the mold material that will shorten the mold life and second to prevent the boolit alloy from sticking to the sprue plate and mold blocks. A lubed mold will also close and mate each half without resistance.
I think you will find agreement here on the satisfactory use of Bullplate for this purpose.

Usually, they could use a little lube to help prevent wear and galling that prevent the mold halves from closing correctly. The most recommended lube on here is probably Bullshop's Bullplate Lube, which can also be used as a general purpose high temperature lube and a main ingredient in Speed Green boolit lube. Some members claim it's good for everything up to a sandwich spread... Others have used everything from dry graphite spray to synthetic 2-stroke oil.

BullPlate is the best. Following Lee's directions to use Alox or beeswax is the worst. BullPlate is relatively cheap and is an absolutely terrific product.

All moving parts need some kind of lube. I like Bullplate too.

+1 on don't spill it.
The only complaint I have seen about Bull Plate lube is that everyone seems to knock the bottle over the first time they reach for it and spill half of it. ;)

I have used my bullplate lube all summer without knocking it over, because I read about the lube before ordering, and all the mishaps everybody had, so I took a pice of scrap wood and drilled a hole in it to but the bottle in and viola, no spilled Bullplate.
Also only swabing the lid with q-tip and one bootle will last a long, long time.

Since getting into geezerhood has brought about aches and pains. If I spend Saturday casting, I spend Sunday rubbing Flexall 454 into my muscles. Those empty flip top containers work good for holding your bullplate.

Has anyone said to use Bullplate lube with Q-tips and to put the bottle in a piece of wood for a stand to prevent spills.
