This is my 3rd 311413 mold ( can you tell that I like this 413' ? ).

I bought this one ( an undersized " U ", IDEAL single cav. 311413 mold ) a few days ago from " Brother Love ". A fine mold indeed ! !

My other two 311413's ( one a solid and one a HP ) molds throw their bullets at .314 - .315"

It is a pleasant change with the amount of pressure needed on the handle to size with this mold, as it throws the bullets at .3105 " ...nice and round.

My Hornady g/cs and my .014 AL checks slip right on and both are tight once they go through a Lee push thru .3095 sizer.

For my particular .30 cal. rifles, 99% of my shooting is done at .3095", so this bullet should be just about ideal.

And yes.........I had to go outside today and cast about 70 or so to see how the mold worked. I could not be happier ! !

Many others have a hard time with this bullet. I take it works well for you Ben, since it's your favorite. I have B&Ms version 311169 works great at just short of 1600fps, but I really haven't tried any higher, maybe I should as I have a bunch cast up of some 23BHN alloy.

No complaints from me on the 311413.

16 grs. 2400 in the 30 / 06 , 5 shots , 50 yards.

Ben - it appears you're familiar with your molds, but have you tried 311414 moulds. I know they're close in appearance, but I happened upon a few that were cast/ checked and sized (310). Would like to put a few down range with 2400 in some 1x fired GI cases - my old Lyman manual listed 22 grs as a starting load. Using it in a very good shape 03A3 - any help would be appreciated - Thanks Bill L

That is one sweet looking bullet.

msp2640 :

I once owned a 311414. I think it was designed with the short length neck of the 300 Sav. in mind. Mine shot pretty good, but was " cumbersome " because the gas check shank was way too large. It was very hard to get Hornady gas checks on and it really slowed things down.

As it was, I still shot 26 grs. of IMR - 4064 with that bullet out of the 308 Win. with some pretty impressive groups.

msp2640 :

22 grs. of 2400, .......It is my opinion that 22 grs. would be too fast. Try 16 grs - 17.5 grs. and report back.

What do you think of your hollowpointed one Ben? I had thought that perhaps the bullet's poor showing at higher velocities was because of a center of gravity issue. How does the hollowpointed one work, accuracy-wise as compared to the standard one?

The hp version shoots REAL WELL !

As usual ( at least in my experience ) the HP seems to nudge out the solid in the accuracy dept.

Keep in mind, I never " hot rod " the 311413. Keep the bullet in the proper speed range and it is a joy to shoot.

I have the 311414 and get good groups with 20gr 2400. This out of a sporterized 03. It is a pretty light load probably much less than a 30-30 but good for plinking. It should not give good groups because of the design but it works for me.

The 413' thru the years has got a lot of bad publicity.
I think it goes back to post WW II years when inexperienced casters tried to shoot the bullet at 2,500 + fps. They were disappointed with the results and blamed it all on the 413's design. Catch is that about 98% of the other cast bullet designs at that time would not have tolerated those speeds either.

Today, I do a lot of shooting in the 1600 fps range. The 413' is as accurate in that speed zone as any of my other .30 cal. cast designs.

Ben, I also have had good luck with the 413 in O6/308/30-30(single load), Had Buckshot HP my mold, and while it was good in the unhollowed blt, seems to shoot even better HP'd. Agree with Beagle that it seems like HP'd cast blts seem to have an edge, and it is probably due to being heavier at the base, center of gravity thing etc.

" The shift to the rear " does seem to help the accuracy of all of my .30 cal. cast boolits, regardless of the weight or style of the boolit.
