Looking for help with making an alloy. I could not find what I was looking for in the search function.
I was given 200lbs of pure lead xray shielding today and have 75lbs of magnum shot. Can I make an alloy of about BHN 11-12 with this combo? If so, what ratios?

I would mix it 3 to 1, shot to to xray pb, and add 1-2% tin from 50-50 solder. That might be close, guessing from some mag shot ingots I have here testing 14 bhn. Now I have read Mag shot run 4-6% antimony. So you could do the math to get a rough basic wheel weight alloy of 96-3.5-.5 using your shot at an avg. of 5% sb.

Go to the search section and look at the LASC articles by Glen Fryxell. All the info you need is right there.

50-50 and add 1% tin.

I have found a 60% pure lead and 39% shot lead to make excellent shooting and hunting CB's. I add to it the 1% tin which I get at the local Wal Mart in the fishing tackle section as "lead-free" splitshot which are pure tin. One package of the splitshot will "flavor" about 3# of the lead alloy.
Last week I visited the Winnemucca, Nv shooting range where the NCBS is held in the spring and ran into a young metallurgist working with the mining companies. He aspires to become a boolit maker. I told him we are all modern alchemists like the midieval alchemists turning lead into gold only today, when we find our own recipe that shoots well, it is gold.
