I don't think they are. They are close for sure, but not the same. I have never used it. Only IMR 4198.

Here is an old article. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BQY/is_12_51/ai_n15736803/

We use H4198 in our 30BR rifles. It is not temperature sensitive so can be used in any condition.

I was just wondering the same thing... I am working with the 45-70 Ruger#1 with the 360gr. Ranch Dog. I tried 32grs. of IMR 4198 that works real well. Only problem is I only had a little bit of IMR, enough for maybe 15 loads. I have an older can of H 4198 so today I tried the same load with that... It shot in the same place but didnt burn as clean as the IMR, had some unburnt powder left in the barrel. Other than that it seemed to shoot the same. I guess I'll use it up then get more IMR 4198. Side by side they look a little different too.

This artical seems to explain the color difference. So I guess you could say,"Yea they are but no they're not.":veryconfu

They are interchangeable in application but not in data. Use the data for the brand you've got.

IIRC, it used to be clained that IMR series of powders were a little faster than Hodgon powders with the same numbers. For instance, you could load a .270 with 57 or 58 grs of IMR4831 and you could load the same bullet and caliber with 60 grs of H4831. May or may not be the same with the 4198's.
