so dad had someone give him some 300gn j words the other day. they are 300gn xtp hornady. question is I looked in my loading books and can find no loads for a 44 mag with a 300gn bullet. Can I shoot these out of a super blackhawk and smith or are they only good for a rifle bullet. Also If I can shoot them what kind of a load am I looking at

Wonderful bullet from the SBH. I use the Fed 150 primer and 20.5 gr of 296. Great hunting bullet.
I would not shoot too many from a S&W, too much recoil force on the gun unless you find a lighter load.
Maybe the newer enhanced S&W's can handle it.
Go to the Hodgdon site for loads.

Thanks for the data and thanks I love that pic!
Good data from southpaw. I wouldn't recommend unique for heavy 44.
About that avatar, I'm having trouble deciding which syllable I like best.

Your best source for loading data is the powder manufacturer:

Great bullet that performs very well in wet phone books.

I like the 300 grain XTP because I have yet to see one open up much on game, so they penetrate better than a lot of jacketed expanding bullets.

I been loading and hunting with Hornady 300 XTP 300gr. 15 years 2-3 dear every year 1- shot 1 kill from 10 yds to 110 yds. I do agree with EOD3 unique is not the powder for the job. I use WLP-Hornady case-16.8gr. Alliant 2400-300gr. XTP tight crimp. s/d 1.615 good in the cold also. my S&W 629 8 3/8 shoots them well. That load is near max 1125fps. I started with 15.7 gr. 2400 @1050 fps and worked up.
good luck.
