Is it possible to use AA8700 in an M-1 Garand if I install an adjustable gas cylinder plug?

.............If that 870 is like the surplus 860 and 872 it'd probably end up being too messy for the Garand. I doubt that gas port pressure would be a consideration. A casefull of 860 in the 30-06 with the 311284 only does about 2100 fps, and only burns fairly clean.

okay, so its pretty much a bolt action only powder. I saw that Widners had it for 23 bucks for 8lbs.

I have done good shooting in the Garand with H 870 and AA 8700 by duplexing and using heavy 200+gn boolits. I could if provoked likely dig out some ooooold data.

Redneckdan,

I just went and looked at Widners, was going to get some of the 860 for $23.00 per 8 pounds but the site says $30.00 for 8 pounds. Is there a sale or a promotion code or something you need for the $23.00 price?

Thanks.

OK you have provoked me to action! Hope you can see this. The load card on the right is from the Springfield Garand, and the two targets at left are the same load fired from a B-78 Browning 30/06 at 100 yards.
If you cant see the load data for the garand it is,
case - RP full length sized
primer - RP #9 1/2
bullet - LBT 200gn lfn 5ww/1 monotype - bhn-15 light crimp
powder - .5cc unique priming charge
3.4cc 47gn AA # 8700 main charge
note - best accuracy with garand
So there ya go see it will work just fine. I remember having a lot of fun with this load shooting a 5 gallon bucket at 300 yards off hand. No problem at all keeping all shots on the bucket in rapid fire. Just love the way those clips go ka-ching on the 8th round. Have fun!!!

Wow you guys are hard! I expected at least a couple ooohhh's and aaaahhhh's on the duplex groups, or at least someone telling me how stupid I am and how I will blow my fool head off cuz the book says dont do it and how it will bend the op rod , or at least sumthin!
Nope nada, HARD!

Wow Bullshop,

Those are really great groups and all, but you be careful with those duplex loads now, you here. You gotta be really careful with them or you can hurt yourself or your firearms. You do know that the loading manuals ssay not to do duplex loads don't you?

(How was that? Better? :))

load manuals also say not to use their data to interpolate or extrapolate data of your own. Not that we would do such a thing...[smilie=1:

Acuaally they invite us to interpolate [read between the start and Max loads] just not to extrapolate [draw info from outside the lines they have drawn]. Our advice to each other is the same as given by the umpire in Field of Dreams,"watch out ya don't get killed". Gianni.
