I was re-reading a Frank Marshall article about the 311284 in the 30-30. It got me thinking about the loads I've found that have names or are named after someone. An example would be "The Load". Anybody who's been around cbs for long knows that one and who started it. The "Bob S." load for the 30-06 is well known and a proven success. What others are there? And I was wondering if there's some loads that should be named, giving credit to their originators. I'm thinking of the "cookbook" type of loads someone developed that have given good results for other shooters. I can think of several more but will hold off to see if anybody else thinks like I do. Maybe I'll come up with one myself, they'll call it the 'dualsport load'.

Can't help. I don't use cookbook loads, I tend to be a free spirit.
I also tend to prefer to refer to loads by exact components to avaoid any chance of misinterpretation.
I appreciate the desire here but don't know that it will go over real well. Just too many potential pitfalls.

The " Skeeter Skelton Load " in a 38 spec. case with the Lyman 358156 HP g/c and 13.5 grs. of 2400 is plenty powerful. The " Skeeter Skelton Load " needs to be shot only in 357 magnum handguns or in the 38/44 N frame Smith.

That makes three 'named' loads. Good one. That's a real classic. There's one from .303british .com that should have a name, 47 gr. WC860/200 gr. cb. I'm calling it the 'David S. load'.

There are a couple Elmer Keith loads, I think they are
21gn 2400/250 Keith in the 44 mag, and
52gn 3031/405 in the 45/70 for 1886 Win
And I know there are some Jack O'Connor 270 loads but I dont know them right off.

From our members here: The Shuz Load. 7 gr green dot under 250 gr SWC in 44 magnum and the much newer Dan Walker load 6.5 gr red dot/250 gr SWC in the 45 Colt.

THere's some good ones here, some I remember and some not. I do like "The FBI Load", but I wouldn't take a .38 revolver to a gun fight if I had a choice. Maybe something like a Mini-14. I found the Marshall article, he's so poetic about his loads and shooting I have to quote him about his 30-30 load with the 311284. He calls it the "universal all action 30-30 ultimate woods whacker". Not exactly a name as much as his desription, but memorable. Nowadays if you added 'tactical' in there somewhere and maybe put a little belt on the 30-30 case you'd have a hit. I guess I'm like Larry at Midway, "I love this stuff". Thanks for playing along, I've enjoyed reading the responses.

There was a discussion on THR about cats sneeze loads for 38 spl. I posted about using 2.0 grains bullseye and 100 grain wadcutters for 400-450 fps. I added that it was great for thumping rats without putting a hole in the barn roof or wall. It got dubbed the Rat Thumper Load.
Maybe I should call it the Tactical Rat Destroyer.

He also used a STANDARD large pistol primer, not a magnum. There is some discussion whether this load should be reduced with the latest lots of 2400 powder. I'd opt for 20.0 - 21.0 grains these days, but the original load was 22.0.

There was also a "match" load for the .30-06 that was supposed to be the greatest thing ever for Garands. It used the Sierra 168 Match King and 40-some-odd grains of 4895 powder. I worked up a bunch of these while I was waiting for my DCM Garand to arrive many years ago. My rifle threw them all over the target. It's a good rifle, though. It'll shoot 150 Sierra Game Kings into an inch at 100 over 50.0 grains of H335 and a standard primer.

Stew

I have run Elmer's load of 22gr. Hercules 2400 under a 429-421 in my SBH. It is brisk! I had to tighten up a good bit of screws in that gun afterward. I now use 20gr. 2400 with same bullet and it does nicely.

Like ECM45 I ran Elmers load in a Blackhawk, and it did loosen screws. I worked up to it starting at 19 grains however. Shoots great in Marlin however, and no screw loosening. 19.5 gr. works great in my Blackhawk.
Have used Ed Harris's red dot starting load for milsurps for a long time, good place to start.

Uncle Frank Marshal, RIP, had several loads that had acronyms. I have a disc of his collected articles, great reading and available from CBA website for a measly $10.00.

Skeeter Skelton also popularized a load of 7.5 grains of Unique behind a 250 grain SWC bullet in the .44 Special.
