Hornady Basic Brass to make .416 Remington Magnum?
Can this be done? Would the inside neck need to be reamed?
TIA,
Duke

Should work, I shortened it to 2.49 " for my .411 KDF. No issues

Probably w/o reaming, but why not just use 375h&h brass & fire form or neck up?

I think I'll just do that.

I owned a .416 Rigby CZ 550, and a Ruger #1 .416 Remington at one time. I really liked the Rigby, but brass was just stupid expensive; I could buy 100 pieces of Remington brass for the cost of 20 pieces of Rigby brass! Since I don't hunt dangerous game for a living, I just couldn't justify the cost of feeding the Rigby, and reluctantly sold it.

A bit later I realized that I had no use for the .416 Rem either, and traded it off. This was before the cost of ammo and components went plumb through the roof, FWIW. Also before Remington abandoned the .416 cartridge, like they have done so many other useful cartridges.

To the point: if I still owned the Remington, I'd keep on the lookout for any brass that could be formed into .416 brass - just about any 'long' magnum cartridge. That would include either of the H&H cartridges, 7mm STW, 8mm Rem Mag, .300 Wby, etc. Just a thought.

375 comes out a little short. 300 wby works well as does 8mm mag. 8mm mag is even harder to find than 416 rem brass. I anneal the case neck , put in 10 gr of shotgun powder (doesn't matter what kind), fill the case with cream of wheat, push the neck into a bar of soap for a plug, and fire form the case. Don't forget to full length size the case first in the 416 sizer die (without the decap and expander) so it will chamber in your gun.

Oh my! How much to short do the .375 cases come out?

Sorry -I just noticed your post. I'll go measure the difference. Come to think of it I used my own 375 brass which had been trimmed to min case length before I fireformed it to 416. Stay tuned...

I found a few 416rem unfired cases so I measured them too.

416rem unfired 2.845
416rem fired in my rifle 2.850-2.860
375 fired in my 416 2.838-2.845

Not enough difference to worry about. Sorry if I scared ya Duke. I haven't shot my 416 in some time, and remembered that the 375 cases were short. No doubt to my having used 375 brass that had been trimmed. That'll teach me to trust my memory.
