A friend of mine gave me a canister that is pinik (corregated) with Red Dot marked on the side of it and the lot number.

The canister is full of powder and it appears to be hercules round flakes but it does not have the red markers I normally see in Red Dot powder.

The canister has the older snap lid on it. The powder looks and smells ok and seems to burn ok. I would guess it is a 5 lb container.

Does anyone recolect or remember this type of canister? I would appreciate your impute. thankyou:razz:

Older red dot doesn't have as pronounced a red flake in it as the new powder does. I have a large keg of this stuff and it was a lot less noticeable than the newer stuff. They used to come in round paper containers like you have as well as 12 pound steel canisters with a screw on lid. I have an older container of Herco with a slide off lid.. that too burns just fine..

You just described the "drum" I got both Red Dot and another brown "drum" of Herco for shotgun shooting back in 1966. Only difference is my "drums" were about 12 lb.Robert

I've had both the cardboard drum and the steel drum. They both contained the red markers. Look closely, they may have become discolored from age. The new markers are a pinkish color in the modern stuff...Ray

i've got one of the red dot kegs as well. if it smells good, burns good, and isn't clumpy it should be fine.

I really appreciate the feed back, weighed the drum I beleieve it is just short of ten pounds of powder. Thanks a lot for the feedback, I apprecate it.

One of my best yard sale finds was for that amount of RD, 10 pounds in the steel keg for 2 bucks. That was about 10 years ago...Ray

My older RD has faded red dots in it, you have to look closely to see them but they are there! I have a paper board keg of Unique that says 15 pounds on it. I did transfer the powder to ziplock bags just to be sure that they were protected from moisture and have 11 pounds left in that keg to use. I bought the keg at a gunshow in Tulsa many years ago now for $75. It should just about last me my lifetime unless I get to shootin more!

Blue Dot is similar, older stuff has really faded blue dots, but you can kind of make them out if you look closely..

I had one of those corrugated metal cans of Red about 20 years ago it shot just fine. The guy who gave it to me bought it in the 50's.

I also have one of the (old) corrugated metal kegs that is pink in color ,also marked Hercules . The lot # was checked with atk (Aliant) and they figure it was made late 50's -early 60's . I am burning it up 2.3 gr at a time with 148 gr wc in .38 spec . in my wifes gp100 and seems to do just fine . Hmmmm, I wonder how long a 23 lb keg is going to last if she shoots 200rds a month !!!

I have an old pink can of Red Dot that works just fine in the .45acp. Rid Dot is also fluffier so it takes up more space in the case.

Thats what my 4 pound un-opened keg looks like to a "T" other than the orange tape.
My dad bought it while i was with him from a local gun store in the middle 70's Same place I got my !911 Colt Ace new in box with 2 mags[smilie=w:
BTW mine had no red dots and started loading with it 1 month ago. Was sealed till then
