Wanted to find out if anyone has plans to hunt http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/4931/buffsmoe6.gif anytime soon and what load your going to use.

I'm hoping to get out to the Sandhills Ranch in Nebraska with a friend this winter. He will be using his C.Sharps 45-70 and I will be using my original 76 Remington Rolling Block 45-90. Both of us will be using the same bullet, that is a special blunt nose cast 40:1 over BP of course.

THAT is something I would love to do with my Trapdoor Springfield in 45-70. I wish I didn't live so far away..

Pat now where do you live that your not close enough to a large bison ranch that offers bison hunting on large acreage.

Just curious.

I am not going buffalo hunting this year but I did go to Wyoming last year with a couple of buddies to hunt the wooly criters we each got one. We all opted for a cow of around 500 pounds. These were for meat and not trouphies. Per to Ranch Owner the young feamils had the best meat (they were also less expensive to shoot). The rifles used were Eric's 45-2.4" Shiloh Sharps, Joes 45-2.6" C Sharps 1874 and my original 1866 Springfield 50-70. We all used black powder and bullets that were cast from 40-1 alloy. Both 45s used an LBT 475 gr flat point and I used a Lee 425 gr semi pointed bullet (close to the old GI Bullet). I was trying to see how Buffalo Bill did with his rifle just like mine. It took me 3 days to work close to a heard so as to take a shot at around 100 yards. It was a lot harder work to shoot Buffalo than I thought it would be. I took a broadside shot at a female one aiming behind the front sholder. My buddy told me that I hit her though there did not apear to be any reaction from her. She even kept munching grass. I fired a second shot and she started to run at that one but only went about 39 yards and piled up. The 50-70 penetrated all the way through with one shot and one was under the hid on the off side. The 45 caliber rifles used by my buddies did about the same. Eric killed his with one shot but Joe fired three into his. I got a lot of meat at around $3.25 per pound all cut and wrapped to take home with me. I am still enjoying eating it.

Is the Sandhills Ranch, Lanny Covalt's place by any chance? Don't even know if he is still alive.

This is why I like using soft cast bullets, there is some much energy that stays right with the game if the bullet does not exit out the other side. Good photo of your recovery to show great soft cast expansion.

Were using the same load of Goex, but differant bullets. what is that bullet design by the way is it a bit bigger than the 1881 500-gr Gov RN design.

Here is a pic of my bullet that is cast 40:1 and is a 510-gr Kodiak Bison Buster

I have been hunting a varmint black bear with my 38-55 high wall. Damn thing keeps tearing up my fruit trees and if I ever catch up to him, I'm going to get my fruit back out his hide.

It will be good to get rid of the pest, but the real pleasure is in the hunt.
Enjoy the hunt!!!
