How about sticking your face so close to the cylinder?
Seems Colt made a few rifles similar to these, of course they were cap and ball if I recall correctly.
Putting your face near the cylinder was in issue with those.

It's got to be better than shooting a flintlock...
IIRC, they did put a shield on it so that a right hander's support arm would be protected from the cylinder gap blast.

The one I saw at a dealer show , pre production model
Had a ........deflector to protect your front hand
Dose the one you have , have that on it ?

what does the throat/forcing cone look like?
