Does anybody have an opinion on the strength of these later nitro proofed actions?

I'd like to rebarrel one for the 45-70 and use it for hunting with factory ammunition.

I know they're slightly thinner than the military m/1889, but they are made with more modern steel and manufacturing methods.

If they're not strong enough I'll just rebarrel an 89. I mean, you get them more or less for free anyway, so I'd prefer the better looking one.

Almost for FREE??? I'd be glad to pay the postage for one?

Actually I got my 8mm for free. And I have anotherone on hold. (for free). Noone wants them. There's tons of them. Same thing for old swedish m/96 mausers. I got my hva 46 for about $20. Action in mint condition, a few scratches on the walnut.

We're only allowed 6 hunting rifles. That's probably why.

You guys over there knows more about our inheritage than we do, sadly enough. That's why I asked on this forum. Dutchman should know. :-)

Any Ideas 'bout the strength? Does it hold for factory 45-70?

Do the numbers.Chamber pressure times the area of the cartridge just in front of the rim. Factory 45-70 has 28,000 psi x .199 = 5583 foot pounds of thrust on the bolt. A 20 gauge is 12,000 psi x .3825 =4590. Looks like the 45-70 is a bit higher than the 20 gauge. If your shotgun is 16 it comes in at 5010. A 12 gauge it should be fine.
You might think about the 38-55 at 4152 pounds of bolt thrust.

Thank you. you're right.

Actually it's the same action 16 and 12.. 20 I don't know. The 16 might actually be slightly stronger, since less material has to be removed to get the shot into the action.

I think I'll just start looking for one :-)

Have you seen this discussion about the Husqvarna conversion?

http://www.assra.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1270678094

I have similar plans for my 16 shotgun, but it is in really good condition so maybe I should spare it and find a project gun for the conversion...

Yes, according to the proof house the underlever actions were suitable for about 12,000 PSI and were not strong enough for heavy loads in 12 Ga. Hence the 2 1/2" chambers. They are marginal for a 45 -70 conversion unless you want to stick with B/P loads.

I'm talking about the Rolling Block shotguns... Some Lefechaux (underlever) shotguns were badly hardened, but as I see it they're not dangerous, the Lefechaux system is extremely strong. However they do wear quickly. I don't like them particulararly.

There are later verisions of the RB shotgun that were "nitro proofed". You recognize them by the stamped 'N' on the bolts. That's the one I'm planning on converting.

It is said that the bolts in the Nitro proofed were replaced by some nickel/steel alloy.

My shotgun is one of the last made (nr 84xxx) and has the "N" bolt. According to this swedish article, Husqvarna made about 85 000 Rolling Blocks, both rifles and shotguns included. The last one was made about 1950 (model 112). http://www.jaktojagare.se/rullblockare

You can find a picture of a nice converted shotgun if you scroll down the page a bit here

As Markus said, these guns don`t cost very much overhere and no one is interested in them so thatīs why they are interesting objects for conversion.

I have a Sharps Borchardt Military in 45-70, but a good rolling block would be ok also...
