i've seen it put off time and time again since the first of February ( no lie ) any date until it's produced is a long shot , u didnt give me the option to choose " next year " ( ok ok over six months but it's only 2 1/2 months 'til next year :-P ) i sure hope they print enough copies the first time geez ...... ( bet they wont as it's been 30 years since they put out a cast boolet book and they be outta practice - among other ummm things )

I'm glad I'm not the only one waiting in confusion/ anticapation. I really do hope that it's here before Christmas though, that way I can read it this winter before spring hits.

midway was saying mid Oct, now it's mid Nov. With books 6 months over due and molds that don't work I am beginning to think they don't want our money.

The last time I talked with Christine in customer service at Lyman she had asked her supervisor when and his answer was mid Oct. Well if memory serves me it is past mid Oct. and still nothing. I wonder if O`Bummer is running Lyman Corp.?Robert:confused:

Does anybody honestly believe there will be anything earth-shattering in this edition?

Sure, it will likely have a snazy new cover. Maybe some new articles from current writers. The addition of a few new cartridges while dropping some older ones. That's about all I would expect.

Lyman hasn't seen fit to update their cherry's to modern diameter standards and when is the last time that actually added a new design. We'll be getting the same data as the 3rd edition with few if any fast powders, no slow powders, and no fillers. Alloys will be the same outdated Lyman #2 and linotype that is almost non-existent. The actual how-to section is a joke. Sure, I bought the 3rd edition when I started casting. I outgrew it in less than a month. Joe Brennen's conglomeration of other peoples stuff is light years beyond this though I'm not endorsing it. You are better off getting your info here at Cast Boolit, lasc's site, and all of Glen's articles.

IMO, I would rather see some reprints of the 1st and 2nd editions as well as the older Lyman reloading manuals.

I expect... that if they take out all the obsolete powders, primers, molds and cartridges, it will be about 1/2 the size of the old edition. So, I figure they'll have to add something back in.

I expect... that some rifle cartridges that had primarily pistol powders will now have some more rifle powders.

I expect... them to ditch the Linotype only 38 Special silliness, even if it is 1/4MOA more accurate in a Ransom Rest.

I expect... new load workups with modern, available primers and powders.

I'll buy one, but if it falls short of my expectations I'll be the first one back here complaining about it.

At the very least, they are giving us SOME attention.

I ordered some "M" expander plugs and the 4th edition. I got the party line of October, but was told that it's in final review. Whatever that means. If it's still being "reviewed", then it can't be being printed yet, to my way of thinking. And if they haven't begun printing, it can't be done and distributed for a while yet.

My source on the book is Liz Friedman, Lyman's Graphic Designer. Her last email to me was in July, when she said: "Haven't forgotten you Rocky, it is almost ready to go to press. We had a few minor hold ups in the casting area when OSHA decided to get involved, but we are back on track and wrapping things up now. As soon as I have a printed copy I will put it in the mail to you."

I guess the only best answer is that we'll see it when we see it. As soon as my copy arrives, I'll give it a quick scan and report first impressions here.

I would like to see them even put the 6mm BR back in with the regular reloading manual. But I do not want them to drop either old cartridges or moulds because you never know when one might strike your fancy like with cowboy action shooting.

Think of all the powders that have been discontinued and others introduced while we waited.
I would have guessed after T-day for that Xmas rush, but this seems like more incompetence then planning.

I updated the other threads on this topic, but forgot this one.

Pallets of the books arrived at Lyman on the 16th. Lyman began shipping bulk orders to distributors immediately, and also individual orders to those who ordered directly from Lyman.

If you ordered directly from Lyman, you ought to have one by Thanksgiving. If you ordered one from Midway, Grafs or the like, it will be a bit longer because of the time to get them to those distributors by truck.

Graf's (www.grafs.com) also is showing them "IN STOCK". Midway shows them backordered until 11/26/2010.

Ordered mine from Grafs and it's showing shipped by Fedex Ground - should be here Monday.

I am a humbug, complete and unapologetic. I despise what Christmas has become, a comercial entity of it own, a mad gamble to squeeze as much cash out of the general populace as possible. I find it completely offensive. Commercials set forth the premise if you don't buy this or that object for your wife, significant other, child, mother, father, etc. then somehow their lives will be greatly deminished in some way and they will be depressed for the rest of their lives and you will probably end up suicidal because you where not completely attuned to the needs of you wife, significant other, child, mother, father etc.

It's all such a tremendous waste of time and money both of which have far better uses for much better results.

Based on info here on this forum, I took a chance and placed an order last night (Sun evening) including the "backorder status" Lyman 4th. It is in UPS's hands today on 11/22 and expected here 11/24.

I say "took a chance" because I ordered a boolit sizing die I need, and the whole order is held until the B/O is in stock.

As for crass commercialism, since I don't watch TV much and have a 5 minute commute to listen to the radio, well, I just don't get a chance to be offended that much. Especially when I forget to turn on the radio.

Christmas is what YOU make of it. I can't be bothered by what commercial interests do or don't do. We celebrate Christmas as the Birth of Christ and revel in THAT celebration.

There are a few of us in the 'bah humbug' frame of mind.
Christmas has no meaning to most in the "christian" world other than a time of comercialised, debt laden obligation that is fuelled by over comsumption of alchahol and makes any sharing of the "joy of the season" a fleeting experience at most.
I dont get cought up in it anymore.

....... I am beginning to think they don't want our money.

I do believe that our education system (full of liberal greenie gun haters) has instructed all graduates that they should push companies to failure, and believe everything the graduate bean counters tell them, to bring us to our knees at the alter of the higher educated socialists. Sad that such great companies existed and are mostly shadows of their former selves, owned by larger shadow casters.

What in a new one could they print that we need to know? The best they could do is to recycle everything printed in all previous editions together, but would probably degrade it's value by instituting the advice of graduate lawyer liability "advice".

Just curious to see when others think it will come out.
Mine is being delivered now by FedEx from Graf & Sons. Tracking says it will be delivered on 26 Nov

Actually, I got a page from it last week ... Lyman photocopied the 32-40 page because I was asking them for data because there's no 32-40 in the 49th Edition - even though they sell the 319274 mold. Go Figure!

One of the gun shops that I stopped at yesterday had a stack of them in stock. I got mine the other day from a different shop that is out of them now. I have mixed feelings about the new manual. There is info using the newer powders, and some calibers like .308 Win. are well covered, but old favorites like the 30-30, and 35 Remington have pretty slim coverage, and mostly a rehash of old info, and statements......... like the 1600 FPS limit with microgroove barrels. The 30-30 has no light boolit info for example, and I think it makes a very good poor man's 32-20. Guess I should trade my deer rifles for a 40-65 so I can get some loading information. It is getting so you can buy any caliber hunting rifle you want as long as it is a 30-06, or 270, or one of this month's wonder calibers that they don't actually make ammo for, and the same thing is true for loading info. I was disappointed when the new Hornady manual came out, and had no info for some of the rounds it developed............. they like to sell new ammo I guess, and they would really like to wean us off our old reliable deer guns. I can understand no info for the .338 Marlin Express since there were no bullets available suitable for reloading a tube magazine, but there is no excuse for other missing ones. Sorry for the rant, but I thought they could at least copy the light boolit info from the old manual for the 30-30 for example.

I reload for my 30-30 as well, and I noticed the load data was the same as the Lyman reloading manual had. I was hoping for a wider range of loads for the 30-30 as well.
