I was looking through some old loading stuf from my shotshell loading days and came across some 571 and some 540 , has anyone ever tried either of these ina 45-70? I was hoping I might put it to use for some plinker loads in my Marlin 1895g??

I don't think 571 and 540 are manufactured under the WW label any longer. Hodgdon may also have discontinued the Hodgdon equivalents of HS 7 and HS 6. So if you find any loads for HS 7 you can use those for 571 and you can use HS 6 data for 540.

HS6 is still sold and is a popular ball powder in use by many a 9 mm major shooter. Hodgdon replaced HS7 with Longshot it seems.. also known to those who use it for 38 super/supercomp major as "loudshot". Not sure how it would work in such a large case. If it were me, I'd reccomend one of the other rifle type powders, or trail boss or SR 4759 for reduced loads.

The only reason i was curious is because I had some on hand. I don't load for the shotgun anymore and hate to see it go to waste . Maybe I will try to trade it for something a bit more useful to me . Thanks for the info!

If you are just going to use it as plinker loads I would start with Unique data for your bullet (somewhere middle to max) and go up from there. I've been using up some 540 and 571 with cast in my .357 rifle with good results. It's slower than Unique so I don't think you will get into any trouble. The speed range you're talking about is between Unique and Blue Dot with the 571 closer to Blue dot.

Looks to me like it should be a decent 45-70 powder in this speed range.

After re-reading the question, it would likely do fine for plinking loads.. as others have stated... I sometimes get too focused... It's not like *I* haven't done something like this before :D

I still have about 15 pounds of Winchester 571 powder that I bought when Winchester discontinued it. In fact, I cleaned Widener's out of what they had in stock at the time. It's one of my favorite 10mm powders, since it delivers the best accuracy with heavy bullets in this caliber. Hodgdon has also discontinued it (HS-7), which is a shame, since it's such a good pistol powder.

Hope this helps.

My only experience with the 571 is many years ago loading 12ga magnum shot shells.
Any idea where I should begin with a 340gr cast boollit in my 45-70 ?

In your previous post you mentioned "plinker" loads. That said I would start in the 15 gr. range and I'd guess that to be in the 1100 fps range (comparing it to the faster Unique) and go from there.

I don't have a clue where to start for the .45-70 with Win. 571, since I've only used it in pistol calibers.

Sorry I can't help.
