I had Monday off, so I decided to hunt a co-worker’s property that I had permission for. Late last year when I first walked this piece of land, I noticed an old scrape line and some rubs down a grassy lane adjacent to a pine grove. This year before season, I found that buck was rubbing on the same trees, so I knew he was still around. My co-worker mentioned last week that someone had road-killed a big 8 point buck there recently, so I was pretty deflated thinking that might have been the buck I was going to hunt. Fortunately, that wasn’t the one I was after.

Yesterday morning I got way up high in a tall Georgia pine. At almost 0900 a nice 8 point came from that grassy lane (come to find out there were fresh scrapes again – deer rut early here) and walked right under my tree. I fired my CVA Optima Pro with a saboted Lyman 429244 ACWW (100 gn T7 pellets) down at a steep angle and hit him in the spine. The boolit traveled through the liver, right lung and exited behind the right shoulder.

Ahhh this season is working out quite nicely so far.

That is a great looking buck! Nice symetrical rack on him. Time to chicken fry some backstraps with mashed potatoes and cream gravy!

Nice one. Did you get any expansion with that boolit? Looks like a 3 or 4 year old. How wide is he?

Not terribly wide, about 15". More of a basket rack. Nice G2s anyway. I'm guessing the same age (3-4). I saved the jaw and will try to get aged after I get it cleaned up. I'm doing a European mount, so I'll boil it with the skull.

Edit: 82nd, I was typing when you posted the G2 comment. Too funny!

Oops, forgot about that part. The boolit steamrolled clean through, so I couldn't get a look at it. Blasting through the spine didn't phase it's penetration any. I shot a boar hog a few years ago with the same bullet/powder/gun combo and the recovered boolit did show some expansion. Below is the pic of that one.

And here he is on the wall. It took a ridiculous amount of man hours for that, but I do like how the Euro mounts look.

RF,

How very awesome. I like euro mounts too. They are a bit of work, but so much cheaper than a shoulder mount. And I think they are a bit less creepy to the unhunting public. It looks more like a natural end to a beautiful animal.

You did a good job on the mount. I've said that I'm gonna do one of these for a long time. I've not yet........

Practice on a smallish rack or two first. The first one I attempted, I nearly dissolved the skull because my Sal soda mixture was too strong. This is the 5th one I've done and they tend to turn out a little better each time as I find out what works and what doesn't.

I like the mount, it looks good. I know the work you are talking about.
Poking, rubbing nipping scratching and all that.

You did a good job!

I usually use laundry detergent for white laundry and cook it loong enough for the flesh to loosen up. You're best served by removing as much as possible before actually cooking it and you've found out that cooking it outdoors, away from the spouse is advisable.

If you have a pressure washer for your car, that might help you, too. I found that it cleanes the bone pretty nicely, but be carefull not to crack the skull by getting too close.
