I have a SR mauser action that I will be installing a barrel on one of these days. My current thinking is I have a 257 bob, 7x57, 8x57, 250 & 300 savage. Does a 9x57 cal exist. If so why havent i heard of it. If not how hard would it be to do?
Thanks, Josh

Because your creating something REAL CLOSE to a 35 whelen?

I really recommend the book "Big bore rifles and cartridges" it covers all these ideas, and you realize that almost every cartridge imaginable has been necked down, blown out, re sized and trimmed back long before you or I concoct these ideas. Most were dropped for one good reason or another

Theres a neat article on a 9mm or maybe it was a 350 based off the 303 British case in the same book, alot of these neck ups were popular due to maintaining a rare rifles barrel, so a re bore was in order.

I think the 9x57 (it does exist) came about due to a law in Germany after the war that said civilians could not possess military calibers. A simple re bore fixed that.
I have a 98 Mauser that has the standard 57mm chamber but has a .358" groove military barrel with the steps in it, a 9x57? Ballistically it fits squarely between the 358 win and the 35 Whelen

Between a 358 win and a 35 whelenm....
sounds like exactly what i am looking for.
Bullshop, Have or do you shoot your rifle? If so how well does it work.. Are dies/data avalible?

Yes Sir I sure do shoot mine, and it works very well indeed. It gets a 270 boolit to just shy of 2400 fps but I get best performance at about 2200 fps.
I also have a 35 Whelen imp and those are the dies I use to load the 9x57. It just works like a neck die and sizes about 2/3 of the neck.
I think I did find some data in the Ackley books but other than that I think starting with midrange 358 loads is a good place to start.

There's a 9.3 x 57, too. :) 286 grain bullet at 2200 FPS or thereabouts.

The 9X57 came out shortly after the 8X57 in 1888. The 54 Winchester had it as one of the standard chambers. The bullet diameter is .356", the 35 Whelen is .358". The Whelen has a bit higher velocity and is now a standard factory load.

Ok now you got my curiosity up.

What of role would something between 358 and a 35 whelen fill for you?

Because I need something to fill the niche between 30-30 and .308;)

I have an old JP Sauer sporting rifle based on the 98 action in 9x57. The rifling is badly worn in mine, so doesn't work with cast or heavy jacketed bullets. I do shoot it with Speer 220gr FN and have taken deer with it. In a strong action its more akin to the 35 Whelen than the 358 Win because of case capacity.

Cases are made by simply expanding 8x57mm up, and my dies are Redding. A modern .358" barrel would make a great 9x57mm.

Autofix you've gotten good information from the guys but I'm not sure you should put a .35 Whelen *size* cartridge in a SMALL RING Mauser, you're better off to go with a lower pressure cartridge than what you're talking about..............7x57, 257 Roberts, etc

I think my rifle was bored on this side the pond because it slugged at .358" grooves, perfect!

Not to hijack anything, but that would be the 300 Savage, would it not?
