Brian Pearce had an article a while back for the RCBS 45-270-SAA. In it he had some loads on both ends of the extremes. A 14,000psi load and a 30,000psi load.

I'm no wimp but I just got a new to me M25 -7 Smith and I want a load that will get to about 1000fps with that bullet as well as an H&G #502.

I am going to take a wild guess and try to hit the middle ground. Just wondering if anyone else has "been here done that, got the tee shirt" to prove it! :)

At any rate, if you use this powder with any cast boolits, I would like to hear your results.

Thanks in advance!

Now Pearce got 959 with 9.5 gr Longshot from a 270 SAA bullet from a 5.5 incher and 1207 from 13 gr at 32000 cup at 14000psi
If you have a similar length barrel and a chrono I would start at 9.5 and work up till I hit 1000. If a Smith can't stand that slight increase of 41 fps something is wrong.
I'd say .7 gr to 1 grain will get you there with plenty safe pressure.
I've used Longshot but in another caliber and I like it but use Unique Bullseye and HS-6.
I use John Linebaugh's suggested load of HS-6 in the 45 Colt with the 260 to the 270 gr SAA bullet and love it.

I used to use Long Shot with my Ruger BH in 45 Colt and I was getting pretty good accuracy out of a 250 gr LRN bullet, probably around 1100 FPS. I would have continued to use it, but ran out and couldn't find any for a while. So I switched to Bulls Eye. Got even better accuracy, and it burned a bit cleaner, so I've stuck with that since.

I do use it in my 44 Mag and 500 for middle of the road velocity loads. The recoil is really snappy, especially with the 500. But it makes everything more manageable.

Always been tempted to try longshot in the 45 Colt, have used it under 230 XTP's in 45 ACP and it is a great load, can't remember the load, but it would push it an honest 900fps and accurate, and supposedly at regular acp pressure, not plus p.
I really like 10 grains of Unique under the 270 SAA, obviously not out of a colt, mostly out of Ruger's but I do shoot that load out of my Smith Mountain Gun when hunting, seems to handle it just fine, and according to that same article by Pearce it is in the 20,000 psi range which is the upper limit for the Smith, again according to that article, it burns clean and shoots good.

Great information so far fellas,

Keep it coming!

Heavy,
I currently use 9.0gr of Unique under the same boolit, well, the H&G anyway. I started there with the Smith and the 270-SAA and couldn't get the sights lowered enough to get it to hit POA/POI. I worked on the rear sight a tad and got a few more "clicks" out of it so back to the range I go tomorrow. Even taking a day off to test some loads.

As for the Longshot charge, I chose 10.5gr. I'll take the chronograph with me and verify the results. An accurate 270gr+ load @ 1000fps ought to get it done for just about anything here in the good ol'e USA.

Looking forward to letting a few rip!

I picked up the Blackhawk new in Sept. The Redhawk I bought used(1998 model)
last saturday at a show.I have two LEE moulds I used for my 1911s.The 228 grain R1,and the 230grain TL R2 mould. For the rugers,I'm using 9 grains of Unique.
Will buy a bigger boolit mould at the next show on the 13th.
