I would like to change out the stock hammer on a 357 blackhawk, to something similar to what is found on a super blackhawk hunter (flatter, wider and lower).

Is this something that is easily done? (i.e. drop in replacement)

If not easily done, is there someone that can be recommended to do this?

Thanks for the input

I have the same question about changing out the stock hammer on my 45colt NM Vaquero (small frame).

I have five Ruger Blackhawks with Super Blackhawk hammers, all in .357 Magnum. I highly recommend this conversion. My first two were done by Olglesby & Olglesby, in Springfield, IL., and my other three were done by Pioneer Gun Works, in Springfield, OR.

The first pair were already done when I bought the guns, and I traded for the work done on the last three, so I don't have any experience at actually replacing them myself. The Super Blackhawk hammer should be standard on the Blackhawk, as far I'm concerned. I've still got two more of them to convert....

Hope this helps.

Why? Cowboy action speed shooting? What is the purpose?

I just like the feel of the lower and wider hammer. More comfortable....

If I want to shoot faster, I'd just use a semiauto..... [smilie=l:

just do them yourself, it is a drop in on the big frame. the small frame might need some work, i do not remember. yes it should be standard on all ruger sa's. the bisley hammer grabs my glove when its cold so they are out, kinda uncomfortable to be holding a sixgun that should have fired and will when the hammer slides past the glove!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

The Vaquero is a drop in as well.

Is it a drop in fit for the “New Model” (small frame) Vaquero?

Yes, but you will have to remove some metal on the second step due to the fact that the New Vaquero uses a thicker transfer bar. Otherwise it is drop in. Here is a pic of one in mine. There is no hammer strut under the grips in this pic and that is why the hammer is not fully seated in the frame.

Here are some other random pics of ones I have changed. Matter of fact, the only stock hammers in my Rugers are in the OM Supers

Where are you finding those hammers for sale as a part?

You just found the only problem....Midway, Brownells, etc. have the Super Blackhawk hammers on back order or out of stock. Same situation with Hunter grip frames.

IIRC SASS has decided you can use a Super hammer in a Blackhawk or Vaquero. A Hunter grip frame has all the advantages of the Dragoon, but none of its flaws. I have them on several Original Size Vaqueros in 357 and 44.

The Super Blackhawk hammer has been SASS legal on the Blackhawk for many, many years. I've shot mine at three End of Trail matches, Winter Range and several state matches. The guy I bought them from had used them for quite a few years before selling them to me. Bill Oglesby wouldn't have built them that way if they hadn't been approved. In fact, I shot them in a large match today.

Hope this helps.

You can find them for sale on internet forums. The way I got most of my Super hammers was to buy Supers and rob them of the grip frame, hammer, and trigger and use the parts from my guns to swap with. Then I'd sell the Super for a profit with the standard hammer and XR3-Red in place of the old super parts :)

Won't Ruger sell the hammers. The part numbers are listed in the owners manual. I ordered an ejector rod from them about ten years ago with no questions asked, in fact if I recall there was no charge as it would have been more expensive to do the paperwork than it was worth...Ray

2 questions.........

-In the 3rd pic (overall) U display brass casting blocks. I don't recognize their manufacturer, can U specify who produces these very nice molds?

-Next to the last pic........the grips R of a unique contour. Again, can U specify the manufacturer?

Lastly, the series of pics R of wonderful quality, nicely illuminated. What were the lighting circumstances?

Are you guys overlooking the Bisley hammer for a reason?
It has to be the best looking, easiest to use hammer out there.

How wide is the bisely hammer?

Will it fit into a Blackhawk frame?

I had Bowen Classic Arms put one on my gun when they had it, but the kit Brownells sells should be good quality. I don't think they sell anything that is cheap.
BTW my Bisley hammer is .425" wide, I think it's a recontoured factory Ruger Bisley hammer.

I ordered my SBH hammer from Brownells. It took 3-4 months, but they were cheaper than anybody else at the time. Now I just need to find the time to actually install it in my Vaquero!

I've done quite a few Power hammer/trigger conversions. It is an easy job, and the results are quite worthwhile.

I installed a SBH hammer in my Lipsey's 45 Flattop and it was a simple drop in fit.

This thread is 4 years old. Not sure why it's being brought back to life. There better be new pictures if it's still alive.
