I have a Win M1892 in 44-40. When the hammer is half-cocked, I can pull the trigger and the hammer will move a little and then drop as if fired from a full cocked position. More triggure pull is needed to do this than at full cocked.

What part must be repalced to prevent this or is this the normal operation at half cocked?

You may just have gunk/grime in your half cock notch. give it a good cleaning, since those 92s havent been made for 60 years?

Worse case is your half cock notch on the hammer may be damaged or the sear is burred up.

If cleaning doesn't work, send it for a trip to a gunsmith he can probably salvage the old part. I dont know if they still have OEM parts available for original 1892's.

Its not normal as your half cock notch is your "safety" so to speak.

I see these quite often. The notch may be broken on the hammer or the trigger may be broken. both parts can be welded and repaired.

Or John Taylor. ;-)

Actually, the international transfer makes both impractical or maybe impossible.

I sent one back to Canada and customs seized it. You need an export license to ship any firearm out of the country, cost $22,500 a year and a couple hours paper work. I was shipping a Siamese Mauser action and barrel worth about $300.

I just hate being right about that, but it is easy to guess that the Customs and ATF folks are
not going to make it easy on gun owners and gunsmiths.

Can you take it to someone that has the proper license and get it shipped for a reasonable
fee?
