Are you talking contour? Round or octagon?
I do both daily.

its a round barrel blank got it from white shooting systems back when they were in business.its 1 1/16 th. in. 28in. long. i would like a straight taper on it starting 4 1/2in. from the breach end down to around 7/8in.

No problem, can get to it in a couple weeks. Do you want me to do the draw filing after machine?

NICE setup for doing octagonal barrels! You do not see horizontal mills much anymore.

Thanks for hanging around on the forum - I have some machine tools and aspire to do
more personal gunsmithing work. I always pay close attention to your posts. I have
the indexing head and a small vert mill - but the bed is too short for bbls.

It's a Brown & Sharp #2. I think it's older than me, probably used in WW2.
I don't know where I got the idea that we were talking octagon taper, I'm getting old I guess.

I would like to second that. Thank you, John, for taking the time.

So can a military stepped barrel be turned down to some reasonable faxsimilie of a smooth sporter taper without adversely affecting barrel strength?
