Guys, anyone out there load for a 7-30? I just bought one and loaded up my first batch, using 120 gr bullets, and was surprised to see how far out I had to put the bullet to be close to the lands. Wallacem in Ga

Hi Wallace,
I've got a couple of pet loads for my 7-30 Contender carbine, one uses H414 topped with a 120 gr Speer SP that clocks around 2700+ fps, a pretty decent load all around. My Contender's throat doesn't seem too long, but I'd have to look up the COL.What are you looking for?

I will put your load on my list to try. I measured col at 2.90". It is a pointed bullet, the book shows col to be 2.55" using a blunt nose bullet.

Some of the T/C barrels have really long throats. I have a 6.5TCU that has one. Called T/C and asked them why they did this and the answer was to reduce pressure.

I told the guy that it might reduce pressure but it also made the barrel just about useless with a bullet under 120grs. as accuracy really suffered with lighter bullets. He didn't really seem to care.

Actualy found plenty of H414/W760 loads on nosler's page. I love this powder so I hope it performs well.

H414 shot OK with 139g Interbonds but the recoil was more noticable. I'll stick to ramshot Big Game.

I stick to powders in the 4895 range for my 7-30. I've been told that 4320 is an excellent powder in it, but haven't experimented with it yet because my pet loads suit me just fine.

I ignore bullet to lands distance. I work up to best accuracy by tweaking the seating depth but neither know nor care how far that puts me from the lands. I do insure I'm not jammed into them, of course. Measuring the seating depth is simpler, and can be done to work with virtually any bullet regardless of nose shape. The trick is to measure from cartridge base to the spot on the bullet that first reaches bore diameter (not groove diameter). Simply duplicate that distance and you are at your best accuracy seating depth, regardless of bullet shape.

by the way, THE deer bullet for the 7-30 is the Nosler 120 Ballistic Tip. Simply fabulous performance.

There is some load data here for Contenders at 7-30_Waters_Reloading (http://tcbunch.com/home/index.php5?title=7-30_Waters_Reloading). You may find it useful.
