I finally finished my SA carry gun this morning. I don't have my camera with me so excuse the mixed up older pictures. The base gun was a New Vaquero in 45 Colt. I replaced the steel GF and ERH with aluminum and removed the finish on them to match a bit better. Plus, it is about as light of a 45 SA as can be had. It has a SBH hammer, Bullseye trigger spring, and a 26# mainspring. The throats have been opened to .4525 and it has an 11 deg forcing cone. I have also taken all the creep out of the trigger. I reshaped the front sight and serrated it. It is painted with Testors flat black and seems like it should hold up well. It will ride in a Mernickle PS6-L. The load I will use is the Mihec 270 SAA HP over 12 gr of HS-6 for a bit over 1000fps out of this revolver. The group below is 6 shots at 25 yards. Plenty accurate for a carry piece :)

The problems with it as a carry gun...... The trigger is really too light and the 26# spring is noticeably stiffer than the factory spring when you cock it. But the increase in accuracy is worth it to me. Plus, I wouldn't be afraid to take it on a spur of the moment deer hunt with the accuracy and velocity of the load.

Now I have to bead blast the whole thing and get some grips.

you might want to be careful taking the finish off the grip frame.

Ruger's aluminum grip frames are notorious for having small pits under the finish and upon trying to "polish" out the pits, you will just run into other voids not exposed.

just last week, this subject came up while i was visiting with my Smith, and he stated he sees the same thing.

Also.........Either bowen's or clement's website states they will not work on aluminum grip frames made after a particular year because of the voids in the metal.

Do you happen to have a before and after weight? I really like the idea of the use of aluminum grip frames and ERHs on carry guns. Nice job!!!!

Yes I did all the gunhacking on it. I don't think I have a single Ruger that is stock.

As far as the grip frame, the one pictured on it is 2009 vintage and is not the one that is on it now. I had an early anodized XR3-RED that I stripped down. I have also heard of the voids and pits, but I got lucky on this one.

As far as weight, close as I can tell it is 31oz unloaded.
