Just found 2 Savage 99's in .243 Cal. One is a 99E and the other is just a 99. I have not had the chance to call the people and ask the condition due to the early hour. One person is asking 475.00 for the 99E and 325.00 for the 99. If they are in reasonable shape, which would be the better of the 2. Is the only difference the position of the safety on the tang? Thanks in advance...also need to know quick before one or both are gone ! :-P

The later 99E's ( the ones marked 99E) were the economy model IIRC. Lesser grade wood and slightly less in the finish dept. The standard marked 99 may be a higher grade model. Best to look and see.

$325.00 for any 99 these days ain't bad at all!

The last gunshow I went to last year in Idaho Falls I saw literally dozens of model 99 savages throughout the show, with one booth having about 30 or so. The cheapest one was a newer model that did not have the cartidge counter, cheap wood, and looked like it spent its life under the seat of a farmer's tractor. It was priced at $999.

The most expensive one was well over $1500.

At first I thought they were all crazy, but they were selling at that price!!!!:holysheep

Take a look at them, and if they are in good shape, pick them both up!

If they are in good + condition I don't think you would got stung on either one of them. I really like the tang safety models, I was raised shooting mostly shotguns so manipulating the tang safety comes naturally to me. My favorite levergun is a Model 99A solid belly w/ a magazine counter. I have carried that gun many miles.

Yep, my 99E doesn't have the cartridge counter and the stock is birch...but I don't love it any less:grin:

Savage only put a "name" on pre 1964 F models everything else was just a 99.

If the one savage is actually marked E it will be a later than 1964 gun with the top tang safety or so says my 99 reference book

They did make tang sights for the top tang guns they bolted up to the scope mount holes and hung back wards toward the safety, or the Williams foolproof I saw did anyway!

I will second the buy both band wagon if you can I belive the E model was a straight stock rifle and in 243 I think I find me a 250 Savage barrel pronto and have them swapped.

I would be curious as to the second 99 and certainly wouldn't be afraid of any 99 for that price!
