What hardness do you need to SASS cowboy shooting.

So far I have only cast lead balls for a frontstuffer. I am going to start casting for my .357/38 pistol and rifle. How hard should I make it. I don't have access to any ww so I am not sure what to add and how hard it should be.

The local bullet maker uses 20-1 for his commercial sales. He sells many thousands per year.

That 20-1 should work pretty good or maybe even 30-1

I don't shoot SASS, but have read about the loads typically used.

I am with Sam. If soft is what you have, use it. It should be fine at typical SASS velocities of 600-700 FPS on the high end.

Vel are typ under 800fps, pure lead would work fine in any caliber. For better castability, just add some tin, 30-1 would work fine. I cast 50/50 ww/pure lead for my 200gr 45colts @ 750fps.

I haven't been able to get any wheel weights. Where do you get tin?

I use any lead mix I have on hand for under 1000 fps.
Down here I always have my 1892 44-40 SRC loaded with 8 grains Unique and my own range scrap that maybe would equal 30-1. It is easily finger nail cut and does real good with 8 grains Unique. Lube is wheel bearing grease + beeswax. Shoot the same load in my Colt New Service 44-40. I have used near pure lead with the same load. You do not need lots of tin and only enough to get good castings. 40-1 is plenty. Buffs were shoot with near pure lead. Elephants and rhinos were popped with 20-1.
For "Hunting" I use 9 grains Unique... same boolits.
Just be sure to your boolits fill the throat + .001 and you will have no troubles. Undersized boolits will teach you alot about lead minning.

Buy 20# of bar tin form Roto, it will go along way at 30-1 & cheaper than getting solder locally for most.
