Howdy,

I recently completed my first Appleseed this past weekend. Came up a few points short of Rifleman with my 16" AR-15 patrol rifle. I'm interested in expanding on the techniques they taught and moving on to more events. The two most likely candidates I will use hereon out are my 1903a3 and M1 Garand. The issue I have (particularly with the A3) is that when I get correct cheek weld, I'm staring dead on with the bolt's backside.

I didn't have need for the instructors to build up my cheek rest, though I wish I had. Anyone know a good way to build it up without permenant modifications to the stock? I'm not too keen on aftermarket rests and would like information on home modified or as-issued GI spec items. Thanks!

sarco has reproductions of the military issue leather lace-on cheekrests for about $15.00 or so. for what it's worth, bubba.

Find one of the lace-on leather combs issued for the snipers.
Sportsman's Guide used to have them.

How are you getting your face that low?

When young, I was taught to wrap my thumb over the wrist of the stock, and put my cheek bone on top of it. If I have my head errect, I look right through the sights. On the M1 and M1903 I get a small bruise on the skin over my cheekbone, but the positioning is consistent.

Just remember that the leather cheek rest for the M1 was designed for the off set scope mount on the M1Cs and Ds. When I went to sniper school I used green duct tape (100mph tape) with some foam from the ammo crates on my M25 (modified M14). Wasn't that pretty but it did work for me (not for iron sights but for the high mounted scope)
