I have paper patched jacketed 458 diameter bullets for use in my sporter Martini Henry. Use a pair of fine tooth files, and roll the bullet between them to make light grooves in the bullet jacket to grip the paper when shrinks during drying. Use no lube on the patched bullets, if using smokeless powder, as you do not need it. I have never tried this with black powder or black powder subs.

I don't know about you guys patching a jacketed bullet with a high pressure load.
Your asking for problems. Would you take a jacketed bullet that is .008" larger than your groove diameter? in other words shoot a .466 diameter bullet instead the .458 the rifle was designed for? I would hope not.
You will get a pressure spike and I would hate to see a fine rifle in parts stuck in your head.
Just because it is paper dont mean that you will get by with out pressure problems.

what are you talking about this rifle is a blackpowder cartridge
and the psi is not that high and the bore on it is .470 so the paper patching
a .458 bullet with 2 wraps of 20 lb bond paper to .470 should be ok

Ross Seyfreid wrote an article many years ago about paper patching "J" bullets to suit odd calibers.

He did what Gregg describes ~ rolling the "J" bullets between a file and a piece of steel to roughen the jacket a bit.

He patched for smokeless loads at modern, high pressures as well as old time cartdriges.

As long as you are patching to groove diameter or a couple thou larger and using sane loads there should be no problems.

The only diameter bullet used in a 577-450 Martini Henry I'm aware of is a .455 diameter.

My Martini Henry Sporter has a groove diameter of .465, so a .458 jacketed bullet patched up to .466 is just about a perfect fit.
The barrels on 1880's vintage rifles were made out of rather soft steel by todays standards.
The paper patched jacketed bullet should just touch the lands of the rifling, the paper is what fills in the grooves.

That .455 is the unpatched as cast paper patch bullet.
Once it is paper patched, the diameter is up to .463 to .465 in diameter.

My Springfield model 1884 has a groove diameter of .461 the old rifles are not always as you expect. If you do not know that is a 45-70 trapdoor I load it as a 45-55-405 as I have a hollow base .459 lee mold and that shoots good in the gun. (45 caliber)-(55 GRS. FG)-(405 gr bullet)

That dger bullet won't open up at bp velocity. patch up a lyman postell or the government bullet.

the martini henry loaded with 85gr of 1f black and a 480gr bullet = 1350 fps
but im sticking with a 20-1 cast bullet
