Beside the obvious, what's the difference between the these two rifles? Is the frame of the 1895 larger to accomodate the 45-70 cartridge? Does the 444 use a larger frame than say a 336 30-30? I'm wonderin because Numrich sells new barrels for the 444 for about 65 bucks. If one could screw a new 444 barrel on a 336 action that was originally a 30-30, about the only other part to change would be the carrier. The 30-30 bolt may have to be opened a few thous to work with the 444, but that wouldn't be a big chore. Lots of Marlins around that can be had for a couple hundred bucks or sometimes less. Might be a cheaper way to get a 444. Any thoughts?

The 336 is the same basic frame as the 444, 375, and 1895 model Marlin's.
One differance is the size of the loading port. I am quite sure a 336 that was born a 30/30 would have to have the port opened.
Same goes for the ejection port although I am not as sure about that one.
The ejecter will be different but is a simple change.
Same goes for the extracter, just a snap on stamping and a simple change.
If you want a 444 or 45/70 Marlin you should at least look at the new XLR model. I got one in 45/70 and it is what I always thought the Marlin should be. Cant find fault with it at all, and it shoots soooo good.

I had a 38-55 Marlin Cowboy rebored to 444, the only thing I can see that was changed was the load gate was modified, just a little deeper concave in the gate.

Don't forget the magazine tube, spring, barrel band etc.

I don't know about the 444 rifles because I never owned one but the 95 Marlin and a 336 30-30 have the same basic frame size however the ejection port is larger as is the magazine tube and hole through the frame on the 95 madel. I never felt the need for the 444 as the 45-70 works just fine for my needs.
