I like old mil surp rifles I have a couple of bayonets but no idea what to do with them, they are just taking up space in a shoe box.
one is for an AK and one is for a turk, and neither one seem very useful as they are.
Any ideas?

There for hog hunting. Keep them around, just rembember to poke the hog as it runs past you, don't spear it while it is on coming.

Hay Dirt farmer, i live between Muncie and Ft. Wayne and have seen ver few hogs around here but I'll keep it in mind. The neighbor does run a hog farm but I bet he'd get mad if I experimented.

an older friend of mine, he is not with us anymore. but he was a pretty crafty fellow, he bought a box of old bayo's at a flee market years back, and he made a nice hat rack out of them. there was even a place to hang keys down below. it looked real nice when he finished it.

Depending on how handy you are they can be cut into pieces and used to make smaller knives. I did this when Swedish Mauser bayonets were common as dirt and priced the same. One bayonet made two nice hunting blades.

Bout like my neighbor, thinks they should just get fat and go to market.

Chris, if the hog is running past you and you jab forward, you will , A get the gun spear or whatever pushed into you an go down, B) you will lose controll or just lose it and watch your gun hopefully run off. The hog might come back at you while you are empty handed.
A stick as it game passes, penetrates then pulls out, you are ready for round two.

I have one on a SKS I have I carry it sometimes when were running the swamps and rivers shooting critters cans stumps or what ever that looks like it needs a good killing when we take a break they look for something to lean there weapon on I just deploy the bayonet and stick it in the ground they can be kind of handy.

Do not know what yours are worth but some of the bayonets fetch a healthy price on Ebay. A swiss Vetterli one goes for more than the rifles saw one here while back go for $700 +. Years ago Century shipped a CTME bayo with every ammo order free, saw one of them go for $55. No I gave them away just my luck.

Set it aside and save it, you may need it.

The two you have may not be high dollar collectibles but if they are complete and in decent shape they do have value. I'd carefully and lightly clean them up a bit, oil them and set them aside for future trading or selling material. Ya never know.

About this subject on bayonets.

Sorry for the jump in.

I was thinking of getting a bayo ..spiky one.Hope the spiky ones are the best.

Mounting it on by barrel by a threaded section Bit of pipe thread.
A bit say 4-5" from the muzzle with a pipe and hole big enough for the barrell bore but has a stop on the end so it is held solid when screwed on by being indexed of the muzzle.

It aint a miliatry gun.

The bayo would be welded to the pipe under neath

This would also give me a dagger when off the gun or a walking stick/sticker if needed.

My question is......What are the chances of bending a perfectly good barrel????

I weren't around for the 2 wars and haven't really heard anything about the proper use of them besides......they don't like that cold steel up 'em.

I know yer sposed fire if the bayo gets stuck and the recoil will extract it from the rib or what ever is holding things in.

They make excellent wall hangers cased or set on the flag of origin.

Good can openers too :)

A co-worker was using one for a fireplace poker. It worked great. I believe it was a british SMLE bayonet.

All good ideas. I never thought about a fire place poker. The Mauser one would make a good lance tip. My daughter wants to use the AK one for a survival knife. I think she watches to much TV

barrabruce, if you are speaking of a firearm of any value at all I would steer clear of completing the task and using it. My lowly opinion of a bayo as a weapon is that a good, VERY SHARP knife is better, and just use it with stealth and tact as opposed to a foolish charge. Times have changed. I'm not sure what you want to use it for, but I cant Imagine it being useful for anything, unless its just something you want. Just my .02, sorry to highjack.

....and will take it back to its pack, where they will learn to use our weapons aginst us and the hunter wll become the hunted. It will start out as revenge killings, but slowly over time they will take us out one by one and take over the world and we know it! There will be nothing left but the hogs and the muslims (they'll probably call a truse) and THEN the terrorists will have won and it'll all be your fault! ......LOL ;)

In that case it would probably be rather comforting.

The Days of "GOING OVER THE TOP" are long gone but some bayonets are worth some good money. The Viet Nam era 12 ga bayonet is worth over $700 to collectors.

Bayonets, gotta love em. Just some interesting trivia, the last documented bayonet military charge was in 2009, (Afghanistan). Their use in the Iragi and Afghanistan campaign is also well documented. Gotta love the Brits. The last time they were used by the US military was in Korea. I have started a fair collection of them due to my love of sharp pointy things. Just thought I would chime in. Thanks, Joe

I have a bunch of those things. From just about every era. I had a bunch of the AK bayonets engraved and set for mounts, then gave them as gifts.

In terms of use as a weapon in this day and age, I guess it would be better than throwing your hands up if you're outta ammo. I feel that as long as you have a bayonet, your considered armed and obligated to to stay in the fight.( I also feel that you are always obligated to stay in the fight armed or not, but thats my opinoin) You just gotta close with those suckers...Thats where it would get a bit hairy..... If your bayonet breaks, its fist city with a plastic club.

Nothing adds more to an old military arm than the matching bayonet ..... or viceversa.

Glad to share. They're kinda of pain to drag out and photo, edit. May add some more pairs as time allows.

Only us eccentric gun types can take a bayonet that we pick up for nothing then spend time and big $ searching for a rifle to put it on.... that's the viceversa part

I've even been known to have a bunch of extra freebee brass laying around for a cartridge/gun I don't load for then end up buying a gun to fit the brass along with molds, dies, powder, sights... and on and on :holysheep

Garand with 3 variations of 10" bayos and a couple of M8A1 scabbards
Trapdoor with socket bayo and scabbard w/frog (the socket bayo is not fully turned/engaged because of the taller front blade I added for shooting the Trapdoor @ 50 and 100yds)

An AR15 at the gun rage, a dime a dozen, but slap a bayonette on it and wow! It looks like a bad ass killing machine. I know it's useless or nearly so, but ain't they just neat to have around?

I made a practice spear out of an old Garand cutdown mutilated blade. It makes a dandy paper picker-upper and sits in the corner of our bedroom as a last ditch repel borders tool.

Looks like an Italian Carcano bayonet

Look here for some info on the variations. The arms2armor site is a good resource for quick reference on bayos from different countries.

mine go mostly used to hold the rifle up - fix bayonet and stick in ground hold rifle up when no rifle rack is handy.
