I there someway to know if I have tin?

Got some lead pipe from my uncle and a big piece of something that looks like lead but different. Its big, like off sewer pipe, maybe 8"-10" in diameter and I think its out of a joint. I've read that they used to use tin in the joints.

Is there some way to test it to know if its tin or lead?

It may be 50/50 solder.

Old, very soft lead will oxidize(white dust). Alloys with tin and, or antimony will stay shiny(no oxide) for much longer. Cast a bullet with the unknown and compare weight to a bullet cast from a known alloy. High tin content will be lighter(there may be a formula to calculate). Tin and antimony alloys will ring when dropped on cement, lead goes thud.

You can determine the percentage of tin in a Pb/Sn binary by determining the specific gravity and using simple algebra to figure it using the SG of each element.

It does not take much of anything in lead to make it not go thud but , ring.
