30-40 Krag favorite loads?

I am interested in working up a pair of loads for a krag.

I would like to work up a plinking load using a CB which would be easy on the gun and shooter (I'm looking into C.E. Harris's 'The Load' using Red Dot but my mind is open), and a full power load using either CB's of 180-200+ grs. or those unmentionable type boolits of the same weight range...

Any advice you may have about a good place to start for these type loads, would be appreciated!

I found the 13 grains of Red Dot to be truly a plinking load. 16 grains of 2400 was more accurate in my Krag.

My Krag and my Argentine are the two rifles I own (with a couple of Springfields close behind) that can shoot an inch at 100 yards (though on some days I cannot).

My load for the Krag, which, if I am able to do my part, shoots that well is:

21 grains of IMR 4198
311284 sized at .310 with gas check
CCI Match Primers
Seated to an OAL of 3.050

My Krag is an 1898 which was an old American Legion gun some Post had chromed. It has a Pacific no-gunsmithing rear sight and I recently put one of the repop Mariine '03 Springfield front sights on it. Prior to that I had an 03A3 sight on it (the Post had removed the sight from the gun/had none when I got it). It kind of matches my best shooting '03 which some other American Legion Post also had chromed.

The load I listed is mild, easy on the gun and brass. I neck-size the casings. BTW, I also deburr flash-holes and true the primer pockets on my brass also.

I shoot 16.0 X 2400 and Lyman 314299 sized .310" for my .309" groove diameter.

Sizing diameter makes a big difference. My two Krags run .3095 and .312 in the grooves. I size .312 and .313.

For the most part I use 16/2400. With a good bullet that fits the barrel accuracy is always good. I have had good luck with 311467, 311407 Mod. Fatter 30 and 311284 and several others.

i have 2 30-40 krags--iv been wondering why there is so little data published using 4895 for cast bullets in them. lots of data on 4198 tho
