hi guys,,
knowing theres alot of talent in here, and some with some very good ideas, and yes even some old timers with the magic, i need your advice, and help. i have a browning 300 wsm. i have 3 molds on hand and wanted to know if any of you fellas could help, advise or have load data that i can use with one of thes molds. the molds i have are as follows-

RCBS-30-180-SP GC THATS DROPPING OUT A WEIGHT OF 187 GRAIN

LYMAN-31141 RFN GC IS A 173 GRAIN MOLD,,,,DROPPING OUT A WEIGHT OF 176
(THIS IS THE ONE I THINK WOULD WORK BEST ON DEER)

RCBS-308-165-SIL GC THATS DROPPING OUT A WEIGHT OF 170 GRAINS

I do reload for my sons 30-06 but have used only nosler, and siearra bullets. i have not reloaded cast bullets as of yet,,but ive got caught up on my other stock bullets for my other guns. i hear that when shooting cast bullets in rifles one wants to stay under a certain fps to avoid heavy ledding issues. erik from hollowpointing.com has offered to hollowpoint some of these molds,,but i declind his offer,,the lyman mold above i believe would make a solid deer hunting bullet. so let see how many of you guys have the data,,ideas,,or the MAGIC to guide me on my starting path. and i thank you in advance for your help.

The new Lyman book has several cast loads. Let me look tonight and I"ll get back to you.

I would take Erik up on his offer and have him hp the .31141 bullet and load it with either 24 grs of SR-4759 (1800+ fps) or 27 grs of IMR 4198 ( 1820+ fps). That would be a very accurate and pleasant load out of the 300WSM These loads are near minimum in the Lyman Book and should do the job well.

First thing is the 300 WSM has a very short neck. Any of those 3 bullets, when HP'd will work very well for hunting deer. I have used a 311041HP for 40+ years with complete success in other cartridges with such short necks but a lot depends on your rifles throat. The 311041 or the RCBS 180 wouuld be my choice but the RCBS 165 sil bullet may be necessary for correct fit.

For best results using a softer alloy (I suggest a 50/50 WW/lead alloy for best hunting expansion results) the GC should not extend below the case neck. With the top of the GC at the bottom of the case neck which bullet will seat into the throat without jamming into the lands and pushing the bullet back into the case and making chambering difficult? Whichever bullet fits best is the bullet you want to use. For practice bullets can be cast of WWs + 2 % tin. Sizing a .311, if possible, will probably prove best. Use a good lube such as Javelina or Lars 50/50 alox/beeswax lube. Of course a GC is required.

As to powder; I suggest using H4895 with a 3/4 gr dacron filler. If you don't know how to use the filler just ask and easy directions can be supplied. In that larger capacity 300 WSM case the filler will increase ignition consistency and thus increase accuracy. Start at 34 gr of H4895 and work up in 1/2 gr increments until accuracy goes south (3 moa at 100 yards is my max for practical hunting accuracy with cast bullets). With the 10" twist of the 300 WSM you can push any of those bullets to 1950 -2000 fps and maintain 3 moa or less accuracy. That is .30-30 carbine equivelent and very good for deer slaying to 200 yards with .30 cal cast bullets.

Other suggestion; You'll need a M-die to expand and bell the case mouths to load the cast bullets. If you are using .311 sized bullets then a .31 M-die is best. A crimp may or may not be needed.

I also would hollow point a mold as well as go with the 50-50 mix. I have started to use it (50-50) for WFN and hollow points with a small cup and like the way it works
