He wold like to use cast boolits in it do you have any recommendations
as to powder and Boolit combos
I have a 240 gr mold I am using for my 358 win, would that be a good one for the Col.?
I was going to try rl-15 to start but am open to any suggestions :drinks:

4895 works for me and a 180gr boolit. :)

Around 40 grains of 4064 with RCBS 200FP works good in my remington.

White Eagle, I would certainly try your 240 gr boolit in the Whelen, it should work okay.

If it is a factory barrel it should be a 1-16 twist. I beieve the reason Remington went with such a slow twist is the fact that they only offered 200 and 250 gr bullets in factory ammo.

White Eagle--Your 240g boolit should stabilize well with the factory 1:16 twist. I suggest you try 4064. I've found it to be a great powder in the Whelen.

what twist?

I thought(?) Remington stuck with a 16" twist with the .35 Rem, 350 Rem Mag and the 35 Whelen.

Yes, Remington is 16 and Winchester is 12 for all 35s. ... felix

Which is why my BB94 356 Winchester shoots the 3589 better than the M700 35 Whelen. Now I have to cast some of the NOE 35809 HPs and see what they will do.

I have a 358 Winchester and was going to go up around 270,280 grain [hunt elk in griz country] but the 240 should do great

I personally have a 358 win with a pac-nor 10 twist that loves 250 gr Honadys
I am however working up a load for the 240 in that as well
also have used the 280 gr's in it fairly good load with aa2015
we may go with the 280 gr in the Whelen being a longer boolit

My Whelen is based on a re-bored 1903 Springfield Mk I, so it has a 1-10 twist.
It shoots 250gr Speer and Hornadys very accurately with 4895, 4064, 4320, or RL 15 -- with RL-15 producing the best groups. I used to shoot the 275gr Hornady when it was available. Recently I had Mountain Molds make me a 285grGC mould for it, but I am still working up loads for that one. My other Whelen mould is a 204gr GC Lyman, that I use for plinking vs. using pistol bullets.
