For deer hunting, fun shooting, and all around great combo. Which is the better combo. Probably a single shot rifle and a Ruger BH revolver. 44 Magnum or 45 Colt?? Tom.

They're all best! My personal fave is a 1860 Henry reproduction and 1872 Colt Open Top, in .45 Colt of course.

A model 92 Winchester and SAA in .32-20 would be really neat....

i go for the levergun, revolver combo's.
44,45, [tied] 44-40, and 357 all able to share ammo with appropriate boolits and some minor fidgiting.
if i can ever find a good 32-20 levergun or a 25-20 revolver they'll be added in.
92's in leverguns.
and an assortment of revolvers.
4-5/8th's bbls seem to carry easiest, but a 6" in a high ride does well too.
need more levergun caliber options in the reproductions.
41 mag'd be a first choice and some supermag offerings would top the list right off.

I'm a big 32-20 fan, but for your qualifications I'd probably go with a 357.

Rossi 1892 or Marlin 1894 in 45 colt and ruger in same caliber if you cast and reload.

This will end up the same as a Baskin Robbins menu. I will take a 44-40 in both and fill very good about my choice unless I encounter a grizzly.

Good morning
If I had to choose the 45 Colt is the winner ! I no longer have any 44 mags.

riverrun mentioned a .25-20 revolver ...........

I know some K-Smiths have been rebarreled and re-cylindered to that. It's gonna cost some bucks however.

****************

Mine would be the .44 mag. combo

I have a .357 Marlin and several .357 revolvers ....... and it's good for general pooping around but I really would not want to boot scoot with a ticked off bear with it.

I have the .44s in hand gun persuasion ......... just lacking a long lead flipper in it.

I have combos in 44-40 and in 32-20, the 32-20 rifle is a Rem 25 pump, not a lever, but it does well. Two different purposes - although Paco Kelly writes about killing a black bear with his 32-20 he admits it would not be his choice for the purpose, but it was all he had when it was necessary. I would have no problem facing a black bear or boar with the 44-40 but would with the 32-20.

I would have to say the 44 combo is the best. Bar none, hands down, no question about it. Its the best. Thats only cause I have that combo.

My brother would say the 45 combo, cause thats what he has.[smilie=b:

And I would have to say....Marlin 1894C and Ruger Blackhawk in .357.....because that's what I have.

I have an early Marlin 1894 in 44 mag. I should pick up a Ruger in that caliber, I just don't like huge handguns.
I also have a Liberty SA in 45LC its a POJ should dump it and get a Ruger in 45LC then I could look for a Marlin.
Fun for me would be one of each in 327 mag.

Like Bosshaug, but I have a 94 Win in 357 instead of a Marlin (wish I had one of each), and a Blackhawk. Have a Colt 357 as well, but it won't take the heavy 357 rifle loads that the Blackhawk will handle!

I've wrung out a Ruger New Vaquero 5-ish" barrel (small frame) in .44 Magnum and it's both small and easy to shoot. It WILL make you do the famous S&W N-frame dance-o'-pain if you get your middle-finger knuckle too close to the trigger guard, but that's the nature of the beast. My 7-1/2" NV in .45 Colt will do the same thing with 305-grain boolits (still loaded to SAA specs) if you aren't careful. I feel that the .45 Colt gives you more managable energy in a SAA-style handgun, almost the same wallup with much less felt recoil.

Forty fives, no question.

I generally don't care for small bores.

I have the Marlin 1894 in 44, with a Ruger SRH Alaskan, my wife has a Marlin 1894C in 357 Mag, and a Ruger Security Six . . .

I have a Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt and a Win. M-94 to match. Fun guns.

I also have several S&W .44 Magnums and a Remington M-788 chambered for .44.

If I had to choose, I'd go with boolit diameter as the deciding factor. That big, flat-nosed 454424 sends back a very audible "SMACK" when it hits, letting me know that the target got the message.

I get the common cartridge theme but we are not in the 1890s and most on this thread probably load for 3-6-12 different cartridges. How about a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem and a modern 45 Colt? Even with the common caliber theme the revolver and carbine would probably prefer unique ammunition. OK, you can boo me now ;)

I agree with that and I have a carbine and two revolvers in 45 Colt.

- unless you are willing to overwork the brass during sizing, you stand a good chance that the brass from one won't fit in another. If you end up segregating all brass by firearm, like I do, they could just as easily be different cartridges.

- there is the theoretical advantage of needing fewer molds, but the only loads I've found that tend to do pretty good across all three plaforms tend to be with jacketed bullets rather than cast. I have great cast loads for each of the firearms but none of them transfer well across firearms for a variety of reasons. You will likely be needing at least one good mold per gun anyway, regardless of whether they are the same cartridge or not.

- it never made much sense to me to carry two guns in the same cartridge to the field at the same time. If you want to carry two guns, I think a centerfire rifle/rimfire handgun, or centerfire handgun/rimfire rifle are much more flexible combinations.

The biggest advantage to the combos as far as I'm concerned is that it lowers the costs of tooling, like dies, trimmer pilots and shellholders, and allows you to justify buying brass in larger quantities at lower prices.

I would also love a 7 inch SBH and Custom lever action rifle in .357 Max.

Doubt that will ever happen though.

I do have a .357 Max 14" contender barrel though.

There are no easy answers to this question.

357 for availability of ammunition. PROBABLY adequate for most anything you will encounter in the lower 48 states.

44 for adequate power and fairly good choice of ammunition....my favorite.

45 Colt CAN BE loaded up to higher performance than the 44, per Glenn Fryxell's handloading work...others also. BUT weak rifles and pistols abound in the caliber. Someone may load your "hot loads" in a lesser firearm and you've created a hazardous situation.

22 long rifle works for a lot of situations....but who wants only a 22?

My Dad had a Win. lever and Colt peacemaker in 32-20 when I was a kid. He lost it to a period of hard times and I've always been a bit nostalgic about the combo. However, I would choose 45 Colt if given a choice, I think. I would really like a Marlin lever in 480 Ruger to go with my Tarus.

How about a Win. M94 in .30-30 and a T/C Contender in .30-30?
As far as historical matching goes, I would bet a lever carbine and SAA in .44-40.
One could also get a BFR and Marlin carbine in .45-70.
You can pretty much get whatever you want.

I was a big fan of the common cartrige rifle handgun combo. I currently have

1. Win. 73 / Rem. 1875. 44/40
2.Colt SAA/ Replica Win 73.....357Mag
3.Win. 94/ Super BH.......44Mag
4.Replica Win 73/ OldMod. vaq.......45LC
5.Win 9422/ Colt SAA/ Ruger 3screw......22LR

And what do I carry most, When I'm out in the woods? Savage single barrel .410, and a S&W 9mm sigma...Guess I dont wanna be a cowboy anymore...........

I prefer the idea of complimentary cartridges and uses over matching cartridges. I carry a 44mag Winchester 94 with a single six or a Winchester 9422 and a Super Blackhawk. Also have the same idea using a Rossi 92 and Dan Wesson 357 to go with the 22s. My idea is that this combo idea covers more situations more thoroughly. The best solution probably depends somewhat on location, goals, and temperament.

well, i vote 22lr, because that is what i have. :kidding: but seriously, my vote would go for the 44 magnum. if i was so inclined. unless, some day, i run across a 30-30 revolver that is. i don't want a 45-70 revolver, i would like to keep my wrists intact, not shattered!

The best combo possible would be a 30-30 rifle and a .22 lr handgun.

The longstanding issue with the .30-30 revolver as I understand it is the tapered case transfers too much breech pressure to the frame of the gun. Too bad, I'd love to have one.

Only have both in 45 Colt. No problems with this combo. I really need a 357 levegun and a 32-20 revolver to make a fair comparison. I see no need for a 44mag lever gun as the 45 Colt does everything it would.
Ultimately, is there a bad combination?

As a most useful pistol/rifle or carbine combo, I have to vote for the .41 S&W magnum in an 1892 lever gun and your revolver of choice. It is flatter shooting than the .44 and with bullets in the 250 grain range is nearly as powerful on paper. In practice, the better sectional density of the.41 probably makes it a better choice. It definitely ranges better as does the .44 compaared to the .45. I do have a Cold SAA and Puma 92 in .45 Colt. They are good guns but are relatively close range affairs.
