My best target load for my Uberti 45/70 Hi Wall is 13 grs of Unique under the Lee 405 gr hollow base boolit using a tuft of dacron fiber over the powder, but I'm out of Unique and have Herco and Blue Dot on hand. As they're both slower than Unique, I was wonderin if they would be good powders for the 45/70 ? Anyone have tried and true loads with these powders that they can recommend?

in my 45-70 it likes trail boss about 12 to 14 grs . I like the load soft shooting and nearly fills the case so you don't need a filler and can't double charge it .Stuff is real fluffy

I know of a guy who has done extensive load testing with Blue Dot and cast bullets for about everything,he has also blown up 8 guns.[smilie=b:

Why not just buy some IMR4759 and load it. Works great and no fillers need.

Does anyone know for sure if Blue Dot is prohibited for 45-70 loads?

I have used Hurco with a 325 gr RCBS flate point bullet and got exceptable results with about 14 gr of the stuff with no filler. It was a diirty load so did not try anymore of it for that purpose.

Can blue dot be used for ANY reduced load's?
I was recently given a nearly full can.

Sure it can. I have been shooting 19 grains of it in my 45-70 under the RCBS 325-FN-U with very good results. Same charge of 10B101 does pretty much the same thing too. I tried heavier loads but accuracy went away and it started leading the bore. This load is running about 1400 fps and works well.

I used to use 15 grains in the 30-30 with a 150gr. boolit, that works well too. Just watch it trying to push Blue Dot too hard. It seems really peaky and gets weird at higher pressures.

The Alliant Blue Dot is a little faster than the older stuff. A 15gr load in a 30-30 would be on the stiff side now.
Just a warning: if you see BD data from a guy named Calhoon think real hard before you use it.

I still use alot of it but I do not try to get medium or high velocities with it. Normal load in the 30-06, 30-40, 7.5X55 is 11 to 13grs of Blue Dot with a cast boolit.

That's good to know. I didn't know they had changed that too. The old/new 2400 sure isn't the same stuff!

Thank's!
Now I have enough powder for quite awhile.
