I want to get some used micrometers. Yes, I am looking on the evil auction place. There are many different makes out there. What are some good quality ones.Starrett, Brown and Sharp, Lufkin, Craftsmen, Central Tools are a few of the ones I have seen. Any recomendations?

Any of them will work, but the cheap import ones don't run very smooth and that makes it hard to get a reliable reading. Buying on-line can be risky as mikes can be damaged. You may want to look locally so you can try before you buy. Buy the best you can afford, in measuring instruments, quality makes a difference.

I have been using Starrett products for 50 years and if I needed another I would buy Starrett again. I have one Starrett one inch micrometer than was a gift to me in 1960 and it was well used at the time. It is still in regular use in my shop.

AS it turns out, I placed a bid of $1.50 on a Central Tool 0-1" with $4.95 shipping and I won! I hope it was not dropped on the floor or used as a hammer.

Starrett, Etalon, Mitutoyo are good ones. They all make different levels of quality. 75 to a 100 bucks buys a good pair. There was a guy here selling a Mitutoyo carbide faced with .0001 reading for 50 bucks.

Make sure on starrett tools that it says made in USA, if it doesnt it is made in china, the cheap china stuff just doesnt hold up as long. some of the guys at work have the cheap starrett stuff and iam just not impressed with it, it doesnt seems as hard and the quality isnt the same. just my 2c worth. I have a Starrett that doesn't say "made in USA" that wasn't made in China. It was made in the U.K. and came in a fitted eyeglass type of case. A real class act.
