Cat Sneeze 45-70 Loads

Any body have a good cat sneeze for a Browning 1885 in caliber 45-70, Tom.:castmine:

I haven't been looking for a rifle of that type, but I would hate to miss out on a good deal. As soon as I can find a cat sneeze...and get it packaged...we can make the trade. The last one I saw was long gone before I could grab a ziplock bag.
I suppose you'll want to send the Browning through an FFL holder...right?

Don't know if it's what you're wanting but the 300gr Lyman over 6.0grs of Red Dot is pretty light. Actually the power is surprizing. I once paper patched up some Lyman 255gr 45 cal pistol boolits and shot a few over that load. Shot one into an old dead Mulberry tree stump and the slug went in about 2.5". That stump was as hard as a plowshare.

I've got one of those guns and I shoot a 405gr. Oregon Trail bullet over 14gr. of Trailboss. I have mixed headstamp brass and use a CCI LR primer. I get about 1000fps. My spotters say they can see the bullet going down range. I can put 3 rounds into about 3" at 200 yds. Good luck.

I have used 14gr of Unique with a dacron wad & a Lyman 457125 500 gr cast bullet.

Ten grains of Titegroup and a 405 plain base is a great plinking load for me and very accurate in my 1895 Cowboy and my Guide Gun.

THe military GALLERY load was 10 grains of FFg and was later dropped to 7 and then 4 grains, this pushed a .454 dia. round ball pulled down from civil war pistol ctgs. The 7 grain load will group into 1" at 25 yards. 4.0 Grains of Bullseye will do the same. On these loads seat the ball down on top of the owder in the case. Or you can do what I did and turn a gallery case with room to seat the ball at the top and simply a small hole through to the base, similar to the everlasting cases offered in the 1800's. The Home Shop Machinest had a good article on makeing these cases last year. I regularly use my 45-70 for small game and pest controll. I can pop a rabbit or coyote off my deer stand and never spook the deer.

To KCSO. How do you push the round ball down into the case? I am assuming you say .454, because that is inside diameter of 45-70 case? Do you have any accuracy at 50 yards? Turning a "gallery case", that sounds above my abilities. I am considering using the Puff-Lon(already bought a bottle) for a filler. Now I need to try and find some .454 round balls. Acouple of years ago I acquired a Marlin-Ideal mold in the original box from a guy who had purchased it thinking it was a boolit. When he found out it was a round ball mold, he didn't want it. It is the gallery ball mold and I was happy to get it for my collection. Now I need to cast some balls and see how they work. The mold number is 457120. I would be interested in reading the article on turning a case for using this boolit. Would turning a brass plug to fit snugly inside the case work, maybe solder the top of the plug to the case to seal it??? Emery

I have been using round balls in a 45-70 for years for plinking in the back yard and shooting small pests. Generally I load these loads into old tired cases that are unsuitable for full power loads. I have used both smokeless and black powder for these loads. My favorite load is 5 gr of Red Dot with a CCI large rifle primer with a 457 cast ball (originally bought the mold for my Ruger Old Army). I lube the balls in liquid alox. After charging the case with powder and primer I push the balls down onto the powder with a muzzle loading short starter. This load is very accurate out to 25 yards and has accounted for a lot of small game such as grouse and squirrels when I have been hunting bigger game. It sounds like a 22 short going off in a rifle (not much noise) and in My 1875 C. Sharps hunting rifle I feel no recoil.

If you run out of Bullseye or can't get it (my problem), try Titegroup. It's right next to BE on the burn rate chart, and 5.0-5.5 gr under a 300 gr cast bullet will give you a nice 740-770 fps load. Accurate and a recoil that lets you shoot all day and smile about it.

Good way to introduce a young shooter to the big caliber and a fine plinker for shooters of any age. Ten gr of Trailboss will bump your speed up to about 1,000 fps. I'm using a 1874 Sharps with a 30" barrel.
