My neighbor is selling his encore with a 450 Marlin katahdin barrel. What I need is any suggestions about this caliber. If I buy it I want to make it a cast shooter only, does anyone have experience with the 450, I am open to any and all suggestions.
Thanks in advance.

High priced brass. No recoil with the brake, but your ears will bleed from the blast.

Belted brass is harder to work with on that type of rifle than a rimmed brass like 45-70.

Thanks for the answers gentlemen. I hope some one will shed some light on how they think this gun will shoot cast. If I can't come up with some good advice I may just put this barrel up for trade fodder. I'm going to buy it because I could use another Encore frame but I'm not sure about the barrel.

How is the 450 Marlin not a belted case? Two cases on the right are 450 Marlin, clearly belted next to the 45-70 on the right.

I have a Handi-rifle barrel in 450 Marlin. I load it like a 45-70, using basically the same starting loads and working up. Recoil can be brisk, just depending on how hot you load it. Just like the 45-70. If I had to do it again, I would have the 45-70, just because the rim is easier to use in a single shot rifle. I can keep Ranchdog 350's driven hard inside of 2" all day at 100, or shoot light loads of unique with 405's for plinking ammo.

OK, that non-belted post disappeared.

Randy,
It will shoot cast fine. You can load from .45 Colt to near .458 Win Mag. levels.

the 450 m is the exact thing as 45/70 just has a mag belt thats thicker rather then the huge rim of the 45/70. the 450 will do everything the exact same as the 45/70 just a little more expensive on the brass. should be a fine shooter tho and if you wanna get off the 450 barrel ...please do p/m me as im interested.
