I have an indoor pellet trap, and I'm also soon going to get a lot of spent pellets from the local school's air rifle range. All my pellets are lead and I know they use them as well. I can't find this in searching...does anyone know what kind of lead airgun pellets are, and how well they work for casting? I mainly use my home-made stuff in my .45 and 12 gauge, plus some muzzleloading.

I melted about 10 lb of air gun pellets last spring , from the local youth air gun matchs
IMO they are either pure lead or darn close

I used the lead for round balls for the 36 ML

Sounds great! I was surprised when they said I could have the lead in exchange for cleaning out the lead...sort of an odd cycle. But I thought it might be a good opportunity.

So pure for ML/shotgun, and maybe toss in some wheel weights I pick up walking to campus for the .45, and I should be set.

Thanks!

The BHN can be converted into the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), although the relationship is dependent on the material, and therefore determined empirically. The relationship is based on Meyer's index (n) from Meyer's law. If Meyer's index is less than 2.2 then the ratio of UTS to BHN is 0.36. If Meyer's index is greater than 2.2, then the ratio increases

Carefull as there are lots of "lead free" pellets out there.

I think they can be sorted by color and melting temp, but I will try to make sure if any are there I get rid of them before I try to cast them. On the bright side, the new copper ones float if I miss any.
