Is it possible to slug the bore using a pure lead boolit?

Sure, anything is possible.

Pure lead is perfect.

actually, it's probably the best alloy for that, just make sure you use lots of oil to help is slide through.

Yes, a bullet will work well as long as it is larger than the bore you are pushing it down. Pure lead will give you the most accurate reading as there is virtually no spring back since it is so soft.

+1 on making sure the slug and the bore are oiled before you slug the barrel.

What Robs said. Also you could cut the bullet shorter or in half (less bearing surface)to get it pushed through easier. If the diameter of the bullet is questionable you can set it on end and tap it with a hammer to make it bigger.

How about loading a pure-lead bullet over a "cat-sneeze" load....one or two grains of Bullseye, or???? Catching the bullet in a box of loose rags or bucket of water MIGHT preserve the measurement well enough to be educational...? Just thinking. (Dangerous, as we ALL know!)

LOL, Bruce, that is how I start my boolit in my barrel. But I only use a primer. That will usually get it about half way.

This is actually how I slug all my guns.... I have a small number of pure lead bullets cast in all the calibers I typically cast/load.... For rifle I usually cut the bullet in half and use the driving band section.... As has been stated, I run a well lubed patch through the barrel and then coat all the outer surfaces of the bullet well with either XLOX or my regular bullet lube (carnauba red).... I then start the bullet using a hard rubber faced mallet and once it is past the crown use a pointed brass rod to drive it all the way through...

Works for me but as always YMMV....[smilie=s:

Bruce brought up a good point. Starting the slug into the barrel is always the worst part, so I wonder if you could just load a boolt with primer only and get it stuck in the barrel (greased of course) then just push it the rest of the way.

Or not...I don't know. Just a thought.

I use a gas check after it's started on the end of my pushrod. It lets me know I am driving the boolit and not digging a hole in it.
