View Full Version : Rebarrelling an Uberti Highwall

A good friend of mine recently picked up a used Uberti Highwall in .45-70. The barrel is badly pitted and also has a walnut in it about halfway down the barrel, but he got it very cheap (he says $200). The wood is in good shape and the action appears almost new. He asked me about rebarreling it as I own one in .40-65.

He wants to rebarrel it with a Badger barrel in either .40-65 or .40-70 SS. This should be a straight forward job for any competent gunsmith, I believe.

I also recommended that he either have the crescent buttstock replaced with a shotgun type or cut down and a recoil pad put on it. He plans to use it for BPCRS.

Are there any hidden pitfalls when doing this that I should tell him about?

Nope. Had it done myself. I would have done it but my lathe will not cut metric threads.

I have done it a couple times. Both my actions were 20tpi. One is my main BPCR sillywet gun. I consider it a very good action. some of the parts will interchange with Winchester parts. I made master class with this one so it must be worth something. :bigsmyl2:

I may have a #3 weight 32" barrel, in the white threaded and chambered for the 40-65 to sell shortly. I cut the wrong chamber, it was to be a 40-70BN.

Thanks. I think he is kind of set on a .40-70 SS but will tell him about it. I have been trying to convince him to go with the .40-65 as brass is more readily available and much cheaper in the bargain.

............I've got a brand new Badger unchambered 40 cal bbl, 16" twist, Tapered octagon with a Hartford collar. Don't recall now if it's 32" or 34"? I've had it for about 12 years and doubt I'll ever get around to doing anything with it. I mean, I haven't YET :-)

Here is my Italian. It didn't look anything like that when I started. 34" green mtn #3 bbl. It has a 1lb mercury recoil reducer in the butt. This brings up weight and balances better than having all your weight in the bbl.

I have an extra Uberti 45-70 take of barrel. Let me know if you are interested.
