I am about to start my adventure in casting for my Ruger 480. I am needing help to decide what I should cast my boolits out of. I dont have a whole lot of lead to play around with, but I do have 27lbs of straight lead and 15 1/2lbs of WW lead. I am going to be using these for hunting applications out of my Ruger Super Redhawk 7 1/2 inch barrel. My current load I run has about 1100FPS velocity. I will be using a lee 400grn mold. Should I use just a straight WW or should I mix some lead in with WW? And should I water quench or let air dry? I appreciate any help you veteran casters could give me. Thanks

Quenched ww alloy works well for the LEE 400, and shoots great in my 480 over W296. Zeeeero leading-- never a speck. Good luck.

Oooh...that's a tough call since you don't have a lot.

Normally, I'd say mix the two and load your .480 Ruger rounds to maybe .45 ACP pressure levels. I know a guy who uses air-cooled WW in his .357 Magnum at near to full-house pressures with very minimal leading. Boolit fit is key, followed immediately by alloy strength/hardness.

ACWW are a bit soft when that 400 gr boolit hits the lands. I sweeten my WW with some foundry type.
Water droped as stated above WW should be good. But size them the same day you cast them or they will be a PITA to size.
