Well my father in law broke down and bought a 500 in the 4 inch gun. I am wanting to get a good mold and load info for this gun for him.Would like a 440 gr and am not sure if we need a gas check or plain base bullet would like to run loads around 1000-1200 fps.
Accuracy is what we are looking for as well.:Fire:

Also I figure sizing to 501 is the ticket or is 500?
Jason

Depending on what happens I might look at one later this year as well

you could also look at mountain molds if you don't want hp

Okay what about if we run her up to 1500 fps still no gas check ?Also since I cant find any wheel weights anywhere is Lyman # 2 going to be okay.

I would say if you are going to push 1500 fps from a 4 inch gun there is going to be a good amount of pressure to push the slug at those velocities so a PB bullet would be trickier to work with and get good accuracy where as a gas checked bullet wouldn't take as much load development/effort to have good results. By the way a 440 grain bullet at 1500 fps would be a fair amount of recoil and I don't believe you would want to set another one off after that............. unless you are glutton for punishment.

Sounds good I guess we will stay between the 1000-1200 range

For all general handgun hunting purposes in the US a 440 grain moving along at 1200 from a revolver will do all you need it to do and then some. If you want to shoot longer ranges (past 100 yards) then you may want to increase velocity to flatten out the trajectory. If the recoil would happen be too much for your liking at higher velocities then a lighter bullet would be the next step you might explore.

This one is a 440 keith mold. I think that this would fit what you are looking for. If you want it you will need to get on the list soon.

Here is another one that is a little different. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=92010

And if you think you won't get enough recoil from them here is one that I am sure you will get enough recoil from. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=73251 If you have any run away toyotas this one will stop them:bigsmyl2:

You are going to have to slug the the barrel and cylinder to find out what you need to size to.

Lyman #2 would be a good choice. Not sure how good it would be for expansion but would be good for solids.

Have fun and enjoy.

Just sent some over the chrony today. 420 grain hp from an NOE mold. H110 - 34grains ~1415fps, 36grains ~1450fps and 38 grains ~1515 fps. This was out of a 8 3/8" barrel. Not sure what you would get out a 4" barrel but I would start at 34 grains work up till you get the fps that you are looking for or you can't stand the recoil any more.

Which mold would that be?

If you want a real good shooter the 385gr mold from MiHec is a perfect one. It will make a 385gr HP or a 400gr FP. it is a gas check design though, and Miha has 1 or 2 left and if you write him he would probably cut the gas check out of one cavity.
At 1000-1200fps it is a very light recoiling round and with the gas check you can crank it up to 1800fps or more if you want with a little more recoil.
I shoot mine with 14gr tite group for 1150fps or 38-40gr of H110 for 1500 fps out of the 4" and recoil is still no more than a hot 44mag.

It is the 500294 that Swede ran just a little while ago. Mine dropped at .502 and the hp's were ~ 420gr and solids were ~440gr.
