I'm not in the "know" when it comes to these high walls. Looking for some input on what I should be looking at or for. I have about 1500.00 to spend. Looking at shooting out to 500yds, on my home range. Cast boolits no doubt.

thanks for the info.

At 1500 you're in the ballpark for a fairly good one. A few to choose from out there. If it were me, I'd get a C Sharps high wall. But, it's the only modern high wall in 45-70 I have any experience with. A friend has one. It is a GREAT shooter. I'm sure it has a Badger barrel.

Unless you find a used one the only high walls you will get for $1500 are Uberti and they go for less than that figure. They will shoot well enough for 500 yards. If you can find a used C Sharps for your budget that would be a good one to get. I have two of their high walls and they are top notch guns mine are in 38-55 and 40-65. The only Uberti high walls I have seen have cresent but plates and they are not ideal for a heavy kicking gun. You may also find a japanese made Browning/Winchester high wall for your price. These are great shooters and good rifles but not really high walls as their internals are completely different and more complicated to take down and put back together.

Greetings
I bought a near new Browning High Wall for under $900 when I was up lñast time.
No regrets and the barrel was bored right.
Head over to Gunbroker and take a look at what is available.

For some reason the win highwalls(japan) are a lot less expensive than in the past.My 45-70 sporter shoots very accurate and the pac pad really helps with the 405 grain boolits at 1900 fps.If your not going to scope it the 28 inch barreled ones with the peep sight are good deal but the curved metal butplate will not be easy on your shoulder unless using light loads. The custom highwalls are great but usually go for 3 grand and up.They are a lot easier to take apart and probably better for shooting black powder.I guess it's 900$ or 3 grand, how much do you want to spend. The 45-70 is a lot of fun in a SS rifle.

If you're looking for a highwall in the 1500$ region and wanting it for target shooting, look no further than the current crop of Winchester marked 1885 bpcr's.
Picked one up for my wife a couple weeks ago, have done no load developement for it, and it's shooting very well to 1000 yds, just using loads that were built for my sharps rifles.
They have a Badger barrel half round half octagon barrel , this one is chambered in 45-70 and is the 30 inch barrel.
You'll still need sights for it, so add another 500$ to the budget, but you won't be dissappointed.

I'm with 405, C-Sharps. I think their base price is $1600, BUT, they add the excise tax to that. I have been very happy with mine.
Having said that, though, Don is very knowledgeable and I would listen to him as well. You might be into the rifle and good sights for what you have.[smilie=w:

Look for one of the Brownings that comes with the sights. One just went for $1300 and change on Gunbrokers. I picked up a NIB for $1300 a couple months ago. So you shouldn't have any problems finding one for $1500 .

Basically there are two different types. the BPCR ones and the others. BPCR ones use vernier tang sights. And can be shot more accurately at longer ranges.

Like Don said, the New Winchesters (same as the Browning just different stamp on barrel) are good way to go if you want new, but you have to add sights.

Oddly, the same gun in 45-90 goes a couple hundred cheaper and thats the one I'd recommend.
