I've got 100 each of 311299 and 311284 that I'll be running through my .30-06 M70 Classic FWT. Any preferences that you've experienced on powders? I notice the Lyman Cast Handbook has 4227 and RL7 listed with good velocities and I have a couple pounds each of these. Any suggestions? Or should I try 4895?

I have been shooting both of those molds @ .311" with 16 grs. of 2400 in a sporterized 03A3.
The 311284 gives better results in my rifle, due to more bearing surface. I think I may have to try a 314299, a little bit fatter nose for my 03A3.
311284 gives a little over an inch at 100 yards with a 2.5x8x32 Leupold on it.

If you try 4895 start at 28 gr and work up to 33 gr using a 1/2 to 3/4 gr dacron filler for either bullet. If you want a good "go to' load then use 30 gr 4895 under either bullet with the dacron filler.

Which is darn close to what I was about to recommend. 30-32 grains of IMR-4895 is my deer load with the 311290 or 311284.

My Lyman #48 listed both of these boolits for the .30-06, on their recommendation I went with Reloder 7 and 4227. We'll see what happens at the range tomorrow, all loads will be in the 1900-2100 fps range.

I have lots of experience with 311284 in the 30-06 and it is one of those bullets that just wants to please. It will perform with with many powders.

1. In the range of 1.4 to 1.7 K fps, the faster 2400, 4227 and 4759 will all give great results once you find the sweet spot.

2. Above the 1.7 K fps range, medium burners like 3031, 4895 and a host of others will all do good again, after you find the sweet spot.

3. For loads above 2 K fps, super slow powders like WC872 have worked very well for me.

Very hard to go wrong with that combination and will keep you "fatnhappy";)

Okay, so the next round of loads will be with 4895 to see if that shapes the 284 up!

I took Larry's advice for a hunting load (4895) and you probably can't do better. For a target load I really like Unique although 2400 is very close and gives you a hair more velocity and range. I have not been able to equal their accuracy with 5744 or 4759 although others seem to have done so. I have not tried Accurate 9 in the '06 yet but it has replaced 2400 in some other cartridges.

4227 gives similar velocity to 2400 but (for me) does not shoot as accurately. It is not a good choice for high speed.
